this.
i'm sure on a theoretical level thats true. on a practical level, though, how close is that to occurring? just as a gamer, i know that although the best person will eventually win the game, there is still a lot of hoopla involved in women playing. So while they might be equal contenders, there's a lot more behind the scenes sexism that goes on that men might not even be aware of that will stop women from getting to a point where they can showcase their skills and abilities.

I mean, this is a horrible example but an accurate one. A few months ago, I went to my server to make a standard purchase. During the sales transaction, he felt it was entirely appropriate to (in the space of a solid minute, I shit you not) pull down his pants, turn on porn, and start handling his bidness. When I was all, "WTF are you doing? I'm just here to buy my shit!" his response was all, "C'mon baby. We're both adults. Lets just do what comes naturally!" to which I replied, "Yeah I gotta go now," grabbed my shit, and left. Soon after, my server stopped being available and had no time to talk or meet or anything.

Now....when I asked my male smoker counterparts how many of them have ever had that happen while in the middle of a purchase, all of them were like, "Hell fuckin naw! I'd beat a mofos ass!" and yadda yadda. However, when I asked my female smokers how often their sexuality became part of the bargain without their wanting it to, almost all of them said yes.

This is what I mean. Your talent is equal. Your skill is equal (and in some cases, I would venture to say better than just because women have to do 200% in male dominated fields to equal a mans 100% until she makes a name for herself). But if you had to deal with shitty men putting the moves on you all the time....and using your ladybits as a bargaining tool....

How much would you persist in that field? If you are a woman who does persevere to the level of getting to let your work speak for yourself, you deserve props just on getting to that point and having a road there that most of your dj brethren will never understand in terms of difficulty.

An interesting comparison.

As for the idea that any of these women would stoop to playing on their sexuality to promote themselves, pouting and preening for glossy club magazines, forget it. "Berlin is anti-everything," says McGrath. "It's anti-brands, anti-hype, anti-celebrity. Women DJs rarely play on their sexual wiles because they wouldn't be taken seriously, by girls and guys."

that is a nice article. I started listening to edm mostly coz of bpitchconrol and I think that explains why i have never thought gender was an issue for djs/producers.
