Get a 2nd hand pair of technics 1200's or 1210s to save cash now, as they will last you forever and they are industry standard. Plus nothing else competes.

Also to be a top dj, you have to be able to rack a link of coke on the grooves of the vinyl so you have a circle of coke, press play. Snort the coke, soon you will become the highest respected dj ever.

Anyway more to the point, honestly consider saving up for some technics and what not, and there is plenty of tutorials online and what not. Most importantly just have fun.

If you are really just starting, don't waste your time with Vinyl. Go with Serato & Mp3s. Its easy to get Mp3s. They are everywhere. Its also extremely cheap. Mp3s are so cheap it aint even funny. No problem affording the cheap stuff. Its also alot faster getting Mp3s with the instant dowload. With vinyl you have to wait maybe weeks to get a record that might not even be pressed properly !

Moral of the story is: Its much cheaper, easier and faster to use Mp3s. What are you waiting for ! Oh and don't worry about your reputation for doing things the fast, easy and cheap way, you won't be thought of as fast, cheap and easy. Also, dont worry about the sound quality of Mp3s. Most of the kids in the club dont care anyway, so what difference does it make if the tune sounds like its made underwater ? You can always EQ the fuzzy mess into heavenly clarity ! Yay Mp3s ! Mp3s will save the world !

I think that the best part of learning to dj would be to start a collection of vinyl, no?

Yeh but vinyl actually takes effort to get. Vinly also can get scratched so easily ! And damn vinyl is ssooooo heavy. Its really not worth carrying around. Like I said why waste time with vinyl when you can just download that sh*t instantly for next to nothing. Its so easy ! Vinyl also could get warped if you leave it in the sun ! lame ! vinyl sucks.

read the serato thread that was boucing around in here and you'll get his real opinion.
But yea Sio your words could have been taken quite sincerely imo- up to underwater MP3s. Personally i quite like underwater sounds- but don't like "recorded in a tin can studio" quality ;)

Sarcasm is hard to type. It would help if you knew me and how much I love vinyl. I was just barfing up all the arguments for Mp3s and Serato, but enough about this. I dont want to start another argument Mp3s vs. vinyl.

Yay Mp3s ! Fast, cheap, easy and it wont break your back or your wallet !

edit : until you spend thousands on gear and a lap top.

i know you said you don't want to spend more than £200 but if you're going vinyl there's not a lot of point getting technics or you'll just have to buy them in the future. there's some for sale here for £290 which is a really good price

I love my vinyl, but if I was just starting out in these times, I'd get a Serato right away. With all the money I've spent on vinyl alone, I could've gotten a sweet new laptop, serato, and several hundred mp3's. Maybe more.

Also, definitely get technics right away. If you don't, you'll regret it when you do eventually buy them.
