Oi oi, here's a tune I made at the weekend, my first attempt at dubstep. My monitors are gash so dunno what it'll sound like for you lot... Went for a techy floaty vibe, well the actual gurning bass isn't but I like it anyways.

Perhaps needs more detail and care to make it a bit more intresting.

Thanks for the tune. A few things we should probably go over, as you asked for honest feedback.

Here it is...

the snare could use some more punch. Completely eliminate the growling bass. I like it in moderation, but it doesn't work here for me. I like the occasional guitar strumming action. So to be clear, more snare... I like the rhythm for the most part, it's just gotta be mixed a little. There are good pieces and ideas here, just gotta subtract a lot of elements where you went overboard.

If you eliminated the growling bassline and bring the sub bass up some, or even modified the growl to ride the beat a bit more, and brought the sub bass up underneath that to give them snares and the kick that extra UUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUGGGGGGGGGH, know wha mean?

Please don't take it the wrong way, as I was only temporarily put off by certain elements. I like the style a lot. My vibe is more Martyn, Ramadanman chilled out garage vibes and this hits the spot for that... I've been searching this subforum here and people have posted a lot of tunes. This one leans toward the style I like, just some touches. I would lean towards subtracting and tweaking just a bit.

Yeah, the gurn just suddenly appeared, it wasn't really the point of the whole track. I generally need to work on mastering anyways so will try to fatten the whole thing up a bit. I guess I could try to get rid of the high pass of the gurn, add more sub (although this is hard without good monitors i reckon) and do some side chaining or try some different patterns to make it groove more

I like the more minimal garage feel towards the end. the more techno/garage-step influence, the better IMO. It's your tune though, if you don't wanna do that, don't do it. I advise you to do what you want.

Yeah, I'm a techno man myself - genrally into detroi and older acid. modern love is a good label, there are loads of good cross over producers, even surgeon plays a decent amount of steppy stuff these days. mu Records is another good for the techno step stuff. Detroit dubstep would be tidy.

To be honest, I'd rather make another tune now... I never finish anything properly. Once the creation side is over and have to edit existing tracks I get bored pretty quickly. Maybe one day!
