Oi you lot. I've got me a new job on t'other side of town so I reckons on getting me a scootar. Trouble is that I know nothing about them. Advice please.

I LOVE the look of this, but everyone I find is either well spenno or looks like its been totally ragged by some kid.

right!! if you're riding anything up to 125cc, you can do a 1 day training course (known as CBT - compulsory basic training - i recommend metropolis in vauxhall/greenwich - they were great) and after that you can drive your bike with just that and a provisional license, BUT you can't take a passenger and you have to keep your L-plates on (or face 3 points on your license), you also have to take the CBT course once every 2 years, but after your first go you only have to do a 'booster' course which is cheaper.

if you want to take a passenger you need to have your full license, however your best bet is to do the CBT, get a few months experience, and then you can take a course of a few days or more (intensive course) and do your full license.

i can definetly recommend a scooter for getting around, really fast and a lot of fun, especially in summer. HOWEVER, be prepared to have to cheat death fairly regularly, and be cut up by bonus boys in big german cars all the time, also you need to be prepared to brave the cold in winter as it can be fairly chilly with the wind in your face, but i'm sure you're tough enough mate :D.

insurance should be fairly cheap for you, mine was about 500 for the first year, and i got 200 knocked off on no claims discount after only one year, your starting price will obviously be much cheaper as you're older.

50cc peds are much cheaper to insure, but will only do 30mph and tend to make a lot of noise, your call though. i can recommend honda's especially as they are indestructible and if looked after will easily do 50,000+ miles, you can buy a second hand honda, often fairly new, for a fairly decent price (mine was 400 quid for a 2004 model!!) and it will still be in great working condition. good models are honda dylans, innova's (they have semi-automatic gearing system (so gear pedals but no clutch needed, which is handy for hills), but best to have a look around and see what suits you. the motorbike version of autotrader (moto trader?) is quite good, and there are numerous websites with second hand scooters on sale, ebay is good also (thats where i got mine, and it hasn't failed me yet, touch wood (no homo))

good luck mate

ps. gimme a ring if you have any more questions mate, or if you fancy a go on mine round a car park or something, just to get the feel of it, i found that quite handy before i took my CBT, meant i'd had some practice and that.

Essentially I just want a scooter that looks sick and that I can run for less than the cost of two years travel on public transport. Insurance shouldn't be too bad as I'm nearly 30.

Good thing about motobikes is that your body is already in a bag. Someone just has to scrape you off the floor like a cheap burger on a BBQ

I love bikes. Not a fan of peds. Annoying chavmobils.

Saying that, I'd absolutely LOVE a Vespa. Maybe the black one with the brown leather. Mmm.

But aren't you an annoying chav?

Seriously though, I'm not into Vespas. They're a bit too city secretary, especially in that black/tan combo.
