will the recession affect the dubstep scene?

Post by digital983 » Sat Sep 20, 2008 1:08 pm

it seems to be hitting hard on everyone elses jobs and will probably only get worse in the 2009.

do dj,producers, promoters and anyone making a living of dubstep(or any other kind of underground scene)feel the effects of recessions?

just curious.

only if people stop going to dances etc or stop buying vinyl cause they cant afford it.

or producers have to get 'real'/full time jobs instead of making beats cause they cant support themselves.

I cant see it having that much of an effect though tbh.

Most producers in this scene have jobs, its not a money game for most of the people releasing tunes.

Oh yes, refer to the 1st quote above!

I don't think there will be an effect on the actual music.

The main effect will be people not reaching as many nights as before. Myself personally cannot go to every night i want to, before i even reach the queue of the club i've spent £30 to get there. So i'm selective over which nights i reach, which ultimately means missing the smaller nights and reaching the bigger ones. I guess there's a few other people from out in the sticks like this.

travel costs are such a killer. luckily i live within walking distance of all the best venues in brum when im @ uni. when im not i have to be very selective of what i can reach.

i wonder if the price of vinyl will rise significantly?

Happy Hardcore will become massive as people want to cheer themselves up. Dubstep is going to have to bit the bullet and stick in some some pop jingle nastyness to compete, it's a rough ride out there.

Cheers, Tom.

I'v never understood people who travel down south or up north to see someone play when 2 months later they are playing where they live?

I live in leeds the majority of the time, & its 20 minutes walk to town, 5 mins walk to west indian. Half the time im too cained by the time i should be leaving the house to go, utter fail.

It wont stop people form going out, and the effect it can have on the music: harder times makes better music (imo)

might boost the scene, might hurt it, depends on if yur gettin paide form the bar tab, also hards times makes people want an outlet to dance off the woorie an stress, so it might drive people out to clubs more, but at the same time they might not be spendin as much on drinks, who knows

If this was the case i'd wait, but its a mixture of wanting to make sure you catch the performance and other towns/cities just not having the same caliber of nights.

Traveling for a night is also about a joruney, new place different people/friends/clubs aswell sometimes.

Saying this, its not the money i can't bare to spend, its that i don't have the time to go out as much...

I think in times like this a scene can only get stronger. When people struggle in their day to day lives, its nice to let go on the weekend and dance...its age old.

Will the recession affect the $45,000 ad revenue on Dubstepforum.com?

Alot of Dubstep producers and DJ's already had jobs before they got into Dubstep.

I take my hat off to those who manage to do music full time without having to work.
