Does anybody work exclusively with samples?

I use almost all samples, EXCEPT my bass. Nice and clean for the low end

I make all my basses with synths
Almost everything else is a sample except maybe the lead and some effects.

This. and everything else he said. When I use soft synths I bounce em out fast anyway too to keep my memory from being eaten so it then becomes a sample anyways. As for VSTs I always have vsts running on 5-20 channels depending. But only stuff like distortion, verb, delay, glitch eq etc vstis.Press wrote:i think more then worry about where sounds come from we should just worry about getting dope sounds, wherever they come from.
For basslines however, Well thats a secret lol.

Another thing is, one key I have learned and been told is it is SO about what your comfortable working in and how well you know the program your using whatever it is.
Most of my work comes out of FL Studio. I like 5 better in some ways because I am more comfortable with it so I use it alot more. It's not like the sound engine is shittier than reason or half of the softwatre out there it is just what you can do with it.
Trust, some of the biggest names in dubstep write their tunes in FL.

Get your self a decent set of 'pure' wave form samples, Sine, Sawtooth, Triangle etc mapped over a couple of octaves would be good but not essential. Stick them in a sampler then tweak, modulate, distort, layer, resample.

both of these effects involve pitchshifting algorithms. if you are PC, look into a program called "paulstretch" if you are on mac, look up a program called "soundhack"Mike Honcho wrote:what about tempo effect with out changing pitch?abstractsound wrote:new mpcs can pitch correct without affecting tempo
both of them do phase vocoding (different from "normal" vocoder) which is a really smooth timestretching/compressing method. you know like how sometimes you stretch a sound and you can hear it become "grainy" that is because of the stretching method.

I use a mix of both - I'd say 70% synths, 30% samples.
I came from a purely sample-based background, but now prefer the playability of the synth and midi stuff.
Bassdrums and percussion are often one-shots, and then I'll play with them to make the loops. Almost all my melodies and harmonic sounds, sweeps etc are synth. Bass is synth and any extra special effecty type sounds are a mix of both.
Yet to work properly with vocals.
