Yeah, tbh it seems a lot sillier to claim to be speaking for the whole scene when actually you've got about three forums involved than to claim to be awards for the stuff people on DSF like when being voted for by the people on DSF.Surface_Tension wrote:I guess it is called the Dubstep FORUM awards though, after all.

The room emptied out? Into where? The stairwell? If I recall there was next to no space to move anywhere - except the sofas me Cyrus and Markle found tucked away upstairs near the bar.Tommatee wrote:I dont know if any of you noticed because you were all so busy filiming it on ur phones, but the room emptied behind you and completely died after Kode9's set. N-type had the task of mopping up the pieces which didnt really seem to happen.
And large up Kulture for speaking his mind. I know alot of people feel the same way.

I think the awards have a place in the scene, this is afterall the largest online presence for dubstep fans worldwide, however that presence is but a TINY (and I mean tiny) fraction of the overall audience for dubstep globally.
People who get wound up by the awards need to take a few seconds to realise that they are the Dubstep FORUM awards. They are the choice of members of the FORUM and not the general listening public, but a small fraction of it.
With the forum being such a community based website, people should not be surprised when lesser known artists and DJ's finish above globally recognised dubstep artists. People are looking out for their comrades, and representing them in the voting process as you would expect. So artists heavily involved in interacting with users of the forum, playing at their events, supporting their tracks are going to see that reflected in the voting process.
To underline this fact, if I remember rightly - last year BENGA didn't even make the shortlist in the best DJ category, even given the fact that he probably played to the largest crowds this year off the back of last year's success. Is it a coincidence he doesn't post on the forum?
It's easy to get wound up by stuff like this - competition is healthy in the scene though, which is a good thing. I like the awards, even when you get parred it's entertaining banter at the end of the year.
Large up everyone. Increase the peace and all that. Everyone just chill, its all a bit of fun

I agree with everything but what I've quoted here. Playing for large crowds does not a good DJ make. And when I searched the forums for the thread about the last awards and looked at the people who won and the tunes and nights that won, they all seemed like pretty big names to me. Lean Forward, for instance, wasn't made by some Unknown producer and voted on by his or her friends. And the same for the nights that won. I didn't see any Chicago Monthly gigs being listed as the top favorite of Dubstep Forum. I agree that people will big up their mates though. Maybe people honestly just didn't rate Benga in the scheme of things. I might disagee, but wouldn't be totally shocked if this was the case.Plastician wrote:With the forum being such a community based website, people should not be surprised when lesser known artists and DJ's finish above globally recognised dubstep artists. Fair points.... I genuinely believe Benga is one of the most technically gifted DJ's in the scene though, hence my shock at him not even being shortlisted. Also, your point taken, surely a DJ would have to be good at what he does to be given the opportunity to play to these large crowds? - afterall, a complete clanger is not going to be given the opportunity to drop tunes at festivals if promoters are doing their jobs properly. There's a difference between being known for something and being good at something. I'm not stating that big name DJ's should be winning just cos they're big names - I'm saying that its possible for lesser known DJ's to finish higher than proven talents such as Benga, due to the nature of the forum and the dubstep "community" in general.Surface_Tension wrote:I agree with everything but what I've quoted here. To be honest, there've been a lot of Dubstep headliners who have totally disappointed me with their mixing. I won't start naming names because they are really nice people and all.Plastician wrote:Fair points.... Paul Van Dyk and Paul Oakenfold play for thousands every weekend. Tiesto is consistently the "best in the world"
I just think these lists aren't really representative, like you said. Lean Forward may have very well been the best tune of the year. But given the number of tunes I heard that never got a release and weren't by major producers I would say more unknown people get passed up on by clangers with bangers if you get me.
all about this !!!!!!!!seckle wrote: or better yet, complaining about an internet forum, while posting on an internet forum. And the idea that this forum is trying to control anything is laughable. We control a bunch of ones and zeros. If you seem to think otherwise, then thats your own luggage and insecurity talking. No ones forcing you to post here, and its a free service, and if you want to take a free service for granted then thats on you, not this site.

I think he's talking about the Buffalo PA. Which tbh wasn't as funny as it could have been. OTOH, that was maybe five minutes in the middle of a night, and didn't exactly bollix up the whole event. I went to get a drink and came back when he'd finished...Ashley wrote:The room emptied out? Into where? The stairwell? Its a great idea to do a forum award because there is so many DJ's and producers out there that havn't really made it to the top like Benga, Skream etc etc, but in some peoples eyes are considered the best. Like its not how good you are, its who you know to make it to the top, which to be fair IMO is a very good statement. It gives people opportunity to vote for someone who they think deserves an award.
It also gives an opportunity to producers and djs that play abit different to the usual anthem banger dj, like the techno influenced guys and the more dubbed out producers etc etc, like N-Type is undoubtedly a sick fucking dj, and alot of people are going to vote for him, hes one of my fav dubstep djs but at the same time ramdanman is just in my eyes is just as good, which alot of DSF i hope will agree, but say that to the general dubstep head who is more into the ....jump up banger like spongebob or filth or something.
Iv been awake for a while and i still havnt woken up properly yet, so i dont know if this post makes much sense, hopefully. but yeah

jump-up bangers bring more satisfaction to us, because when you're there, on the fckin dancefloor, it's really the pace that matters.
you'll never say "i had a good time 2 months ago, i was alone in my room and listening to a radio show".. you'll always say "OMFG, IT WAS INSANE LAST NITE AT DMZ WHEN COKI DROPPED ROBOTNIK AND ME AND MY MATES WENT BERSERK". i think we should really give the proper credit to those tunes making us move.
and last, but not least.. whenever dubstep gets denigrated as "the boring stuff that nobody can dance to" by any arrogant junglists/dnb heads, guess which tunes can prove them wrong. don't you just love having justice on your side?
They might make you dance, but i mean would burial who is one of the most impressive producers in the scene make you dance when you hear his shit when your out? Not as much as the stuff you mentioned but no doubt he will be considerd for best producer no?
