Now and again i use a spectrum analyser (a free one for mac) but you would probably be better off honing your EQ'ing techniques...this sounds a bit obvious, (one thing that is evident is how some are programmed and give minor discrepancies between each other, if you think detail like that doesn't matter then why are you frequency analyzing?), so here's an old but well written EQ tutorial for those interested, written by 'steve aka hipnotic'

Just been going thru some I downloaded on google as we speakfutures_untold wrote:I think the voxengo analysers work in standalone mode.
Otherwise, enter 'standalone frequency analyser' into google for a list of results(I've checked).
Not as easy as you may think to find a free one that actually works tho lol
Don’t worry about people stealing an idea. If it’s original, you will have to ram it down their throats.

I'm so glad you said that - I was going to wade in and say exactly the same thingJtransition wrote:You do not need a spectrum analyser... it wil actually hold you back in terms of learnig frequencys besides you have got the best type of spectrum analysers stuck on each side of your head

They can be handy in the early stages, it is true, but one should TRY only to use it for checking what their ears are telling them. As time goes by, you'll need it less and less.
Don't get me started about people who proudly say how flat they made the line in their analyser!!
