Name how many musical styles actually make you laugh out loud (deliberately) - doubt it's that many. I've personally been bored to death by DJ's doing their "serious" music thing on many an occassion, so it does bring something different to the party (which is essentially about enjoyment, unless you know otherwise).
I suppose I'm talking about a holistic approach to music. Balance is key. And I often laugh out loud when I hear a ridiculous dubstep bassline. That's pure joy, no sneering or mocking, no inverted snobbery. Also, I wouldn't be so quick to reduce 'parties' to being simply about 'enjoyment'.

Cynicism was the life-blood of punk (whatever your feelings on that might be) and although this is unlikely to cross over to that degree, some things are better confronted with laughter than anger.
Absolutely, but it can also be a bit of a cop-out. Punk had a point to make, but cynicism and nihilism are dead ends when made a goal. It's self-defeating - it's exactly what those perveyors of consumer superficiality and politcal bullshit would want you to think - 'it's all bollocks, so who gives a fuck!'

Haha, yes. I did drop that in as a bit of a provocation

But y'know I think there is an avoidance of the genuinely weird, 'wrong', odd in this scene. Like punk it's become codified. It's often extremely conservative IMO. Hyperspeed splatterbreaks just lose all impact very quickly, and crap culture is such a soft target to poke fun at.
I'm just arguing for the sake of it really, but if music and culture matters at all then it's worth discussing. I think it matters, even if makes me seem like I hate fun.
