Shonky wrote:To be honest I find a lot of gabba tedious (kick drum, drill noise, NEXT...), but for all the people that were taking this hard-as-nails noise seriously, others were finding it very funny indeed. Name how many musical styles actually make you laugh out loud (deliberately) - doubt it's that many. I've personally been bored to death by DJ's doing their "serious" music thing on many an occassion, so it does bring something different to the party (which is essentially about enjoyment, unless you know otherwise).
I suppose I'm talking about a holistic approach to music. Balance is key. And I often laugh out loud when I hear a ridiculous dubstep bassline. That's pure joy, no sneering or mocking, no inverted snobbery. Also, I wouldn't be so quick to reduce 'parties' to being simply about 'enjoyment'.
Shonky wrote:Cynicism's very easy in an age of consumer superficiality and political bullshit, so in a way I see this as a far more honest reaction to modern life than people give it credit for. Cynicism was the life-blood of punk (whatever your feelings on that might be) and although this is unlikely to cross over to that degree, some things are better confronted with laughter than anger.
Absolutely, but it can also be a bit of a cop-out. Punk had a point to make, but cynicism and nihilism are dead ends when made a goal. It's self-defeating - it's exactly what those perveyors of consumer superficiality and politcal bullshit would want you to think - 'it's all bollocks, so who gives a fuck!'
Shonky wrote:As for the fear of the feminine/darkness/sacred/etc - think you might be reading too much into this, and it certainly doesn't reflect the people that are into this music. Too much time spent at blissblog methinks
Haha, yes. I did drop that in as a bit of a provocation ;) But y'know I think there is an avoidance of the genuinely weird, 'wrong', odd in this scene. Like punk it's become codified. It's often extremely conservative IMO. Hyperspeed splatterbreaks just lose all impact very quickly, and crap culture is such a soft target to poke fun at.

I'm just arguing for the sake of it really, but if music and culture matters at all then it's worth discussing. I think it matters, even if makes me seem like I hate fun.

Party - A social gathering especially for pleasure or amusement

Definition right there (although I do know what you mean)

Think it's been going on too long to still have the "shock of the new" about it, but if I fancy a laugh (as I often do), it can hit the spot like no other.

Ridiculous dubstep basslines do make me laugh like a loon on occassion, but nowhere near as much as those ridiculous dnb, distorted to fuck, reese and hoover breakdowns - just picture the producer sitting at his pc going "how can I make this sound just a tad more evil".

To paraphrase Spinal Tap - "there's a thin line between evil and stupid"
Hmm....

The problem with comedy music is that it's like hearing a joke - might be funny the first time you hear it, but once someone's told you the joke 5 times in a row you're ready to give them a proper twatting.

That's why they tell different jokes though, innit.

Yeah but with people like shitmat it's the same format over and over again. Like hearing 20 knock knock jokes in a row. Find a funny sample, slap an amen on it... sorted.

This metaphor's gone too far :D

i hear you. especially some of kromestar's dubs have had this effect on me. they're so sick you have to laugh.

on the other hand, someone who's (often, not always) good at combining humour and seriously good music is luke vibert. eg the 1st kerrier district album. the music's done so very well that it's hard to consider it a joke, which it partially may be, too. this, to me, is a far more interesting form of irony than throwing some funny samples on a distorted breakbeat. exactly cos you never know how ironic it really is.

oh well, my 2 eurocents on a lazy sunday afternoon.

Agree with the luke vibert comment dog.. the amen andrews stuff is a good example of what you're talking about.

county side alliance at glade was hilarious aswell, I reckon if you start going into an indepth discussion about them parodying music or just taking the piss etc your taking them much too seriously, I dont think I would buy any of scotch eggs tracks but he is always wickid live.
As for breakcore I reckon thers alot of stuff that doesn't do it for me, infact in my opinion the majority of it is shit, but there are still some good artists that are more 'serious' then the wrong music lot, enduser, mathhead, exile, hellfish & producer, spectre, abelcaine etc.

DJ Psylage - Keep it Rustic - tunage

Get the feeling that the serious end of Wrong Music provided me with one of my most disappointing nights out in ages though. Kind of like going to see Johnny Vegas do WW1 poetry
