Showcase For Unsigned Electronic Music Artists Competition

Post by andyk364 » Mon Aug 14, 2006 6:40 pm

Hello,
My name's Andrew and I've just set up an online competition where I will showcase my favourite 30 unsigned electronic music artists for each of six
genres of electronic music.
Entry is free & the chosen artists have a chance of winning over £20K each.
Please visit my website www.unsignedbeats.com for further information or email me at info@unsignedbeats.com.
If you would like me to consider you, please send me a link to your music.

Either way please checkout the site, get involved in the competition and enjoy the music.

Thank you

why all the negativity?

Post by andyk364 » Tue Aug 15, 2006 1:17 am

while i appreciate a bit of scepticism, i must admit i'm a bit confused as to
what people think the 'scam' actually might be?

ok, i admit it's a bit different - but that's the hole point.

i'm just a guy into music who believes he has a good novel idea for a business that will not only make me some money (hopefully), but also has the capacity to give a couple of hundred unsigned electronic music artists huge exposure and 18 of them £20,000 each.

What can be wrong with that?

ok... since you asked.
from your own FAQs wrote: Advertising space will be sold to music related businesses such as record labels, music stores, clubs, radio stations, studio's, magazines, distributors, etc. Their adverts will appear on the 'pixel' homepage together with the unsigned artists.
and again from FAQs wrote: 1. 10,000 blocks in total
2. 1,710 free blocks for unsigned artists
3. 8,290 payable blocks for advertisers
So the "huge exposure" to which you refer will require that visitors be able to distinguish between an artist's pixel block and an advertiser's pixel block... less than 20% of the real estate is dedicated to the artists.

Plus, what audience do you expect to come here? It's certainly not going to gain much press as the million dollar homepage was a bit of an anomaly that passed by... you think you are going to make $39K selling your last 1000pixels on eBay? I think not.

So basically, gullible artists will come to your page to look at other gullible artists if they can find them wading through your 8,000 advertisers who, if they are smart, will submit artwork that looks strikingly like your artist squares to trick the visitor into clicking their space.

Your business model is not valid to anyone but the advertisers who are hoping to profit off of the artists on the page. I HIGHLY DOUBT that any A&R reps will spend time staring at a checkerboard of avatars to determine whether they want to pick up an artist or not.

Why would anyone but the people who have purchased space or have their mugs up there already even bother visiting? If you have a solid answer to that question then I may back off a little. ;)

whats wrong with it? Few things for starters,

1) Taken from your site:

Q: Where will the money for the prize winners come from?

A: Advertising space will be sold to music related businesses such as record labels, music stores, clubs, radio stations, studio's, magazines, distributors, etc. Their adverts will appear on the 'pixel' homepage together with the unsigned artists.

The key word there is WILL, which meens that the prize money has not been generated yet.
What if all the record labels, music stores, clubs, radio stations, studio's, magazines, distributors, etc, laugh in your face and you sell nothing at all?

2) Your Terms page contains a picture of some festival or something and no terms.

3) Your Contact page contains no information at all, just a page where someone can enter some info and pray you get back to them.

4) Your Blog only has entries from someone named: Rogue Kandyman. Name it self gives it away that this entire thing is a bogus.

5) Your FAQ fails to state what is done with tracks that are turned in.

6) This one really bothers me: again, taken from your site:

Q: It seems that you'll be making a nice profit at the end of this - how can you justify that?
A: As with any business venture, there are no guarantee's. This will be my only source of income and I will be dedicating all of my working hours to it. I have already invested hundreds of hours in this project and truly believe it to be a fanatastic idea that will benefit many people for a long time. Also, I will be investing a large portion of the income on marketing & promoting the venture.
This is not going to be an easy poject - for it to succeed it will need a huge amount of planning, effort, motivation, discipline and administration on my part.

Real Answer:
A: im just some lazy crack head who payed a 5 year old to make my site and the truth is, im broke, i got no life and im an idiot. I totaly love electronic music and since i lack the tallent to make it, i figured that if i make some fake contest and lure real artists to it with promises of cash and no contact info, i can get away with murder!!

Apparently you dont know this history of electronic music too well. This has been tryed many times over the years and you know what happens to those people??
A) Sued so hardcore, their families feel it.
or
B) They get beaten to a pulp and dumped in a river.

I hope you understand something, you can NEVER scam people in this community!! We are experienced, smart and above all, Unified to fight soundbwoys such as yourself.

Mass Disrepect ya Scammer!!

very interesting, where do i start:
1. the site has only been up for one week, it's not a corporate thing and so i'm still tweaking and polishing the site and the idea.
2. i have no intention of scamming anyone, the worst thing that could happen is that i don't sell any advertising space and therefore no prize money. However, the prize fund will be apparent to everybody.
3. the artists links will be obvious to users as they only appear on the border of the page and are a fixed size.
4. the exposure will come from people coming to the site to vote for their favourite artists. obviously, this is down to me marketing & promoting the competition as with any business.
5. you say that the business model is not valid to anyone except advertisers - if the advertisers are happy then that's the foundation of the project.
6. the prize money has not been generated and i have made no promises of that.
7. the blog is under my DJ name
8. people do not send me tracks, only links. if i don't like the music then i move on.
9. what do i have to gain by promoting a 'fake contest' and how would i be 'getting away with murder' ?
10. regarding contact info - this can be easily found out by anyone that was really interested and in any case will go on the site in due course

5. you say that the business model is not valid to anyone except advertisers - if the advertisers are happy then that's the foundation of the project.
Herein lies the rub. SO what you are saying is that your headline, rather than reading:

"A Showcase Of The Very Best Unsigned Electronic Music Artists Each With A Chance Of Winning Over £20,000"

should really read:

"A showcase of (hopefully) lots of advertisements with artists bordering the same page somewhere who might win some money if I actually sell enough ads."

The mere fact that you see the advertisers as your target audience is your major flaw. Advertisers see value in content and traffic. If you are really trying to create a space where artists can be showcased and supported then I would suggest you change your model so the pixel ads are ALL ads and you give actual bio space to the artists in a separate section.

As for voting, the steps required for me as a visitor to even glean an opinion of the artists work is a barrier to your success. I go to your site - you take me to myspace - I listen to songs - I go back to your site - I find your voting page ??

Anyway, I never suggested you were scamming but it really seems that you are more interested in personal success than creating a platform for artists to be heard... listen to your opening statement - "where I will showcase my favourite 30 unsigned electronic music artists" ... who are you? and why would I give a crap about YOUR favourite artists? How is your opinion or taste any more or less valid than anyone elses?

Not to mention that "a chance to win" is standard Sweepstakes semantics - where at least ONE person is guaranteed a prize. Your rebuttal suggests that there is a chance that NO ONE will win 20K. Deceiving and shady - you see why people are getting upset?

i was thinkin the same thing to. Isn't judging usually done by a panel of judges and not just one?

It sucks cause this guy is prolly gunna vanish, take down his site, use all the details we called him out on and make a whole new scam.
