indian music influence on dubstep/hip hop

i was going to write a paper for my international business class that focused on India's influence on urban music, however, I wanted to reference some certain songs. So far, I can think of Dusk and Blackdown and the new Chase and Status track. any more examples you guys know of? examples of hip hop tracks using indian samples would be very helpful as well. big up.

as far as hip hop.. timbaland went on a spree for like a year w/ using TONS of indian style beats/instruments..

jay-z did a collab wit punjabi

busta rhymes had a song called "thoya thoya" or some shit like dat

chorus: "she had me singin- thoya thoya thoya thoya thoy----a thoya she had me singin......." something along dem lines


they also have been a big influence in dancehall

beenie and bounty had a beef track to dat one bin laden riddim or some riddim where its adancehall beat wit tabla drums in it, cant remember the name exactly now

it's old news.

there's no 'influence' on hiphop. it's not like timba's sitting around transcribing swapan choudhuri's tabla solos. Either things get lifted from the 'deepest india' or 'vindaloops' akai sample cd's, or something gets sampled and next thing you know, R. Kelley's on a sand dune with a sitar singing about snake charmers. insert vomit point here.

also, remember that DJ Quick also got extremely, extremely sued for jacking "kalyan ka chaman." further proof that the jacking of desi samples is not a super-thought-out process; producers find something that strikes their ear and write to it. that one's a killer riddim. shit song and extremely corny/stylized-to-the-point-of-racist video but shit, the girls like to dance to it. one can only complain so much.

i'm really glad 'mundian to bach ke' broke out, it was a gigantic hit in the bhangra world for the better part of the last decade. Raj-- PMC--didn't really get a dime from the orig. release so i'm glad he can feed his kids off of the jay-z version.

otherwise, chase & status sampled a nice bit out of 'devdas." it says more that they dig for cool stuff and are wicked producers than anything about desi music. A desi kid sent me a bassline tune using the same sample called "silsilia."

the place to go for all this is Bobby & Nihal's show on Radio 1, tuesday nights just before MAH's show, and nerm's Electro East show on BBC Asian Network. B&N and Nerm have been super-supportive of a lot of faces that are familiar on this board: myself and all of Sub Swara, Geiom, Sukh Knight, MDK Cartel, NuPhlo, Kush Arora, V.I.V.E.K... and i believe 'eastern jam' is in their top of the year, if not THE top tune.

if you want examples from a few years ago, look at the comp CD B&N put out. otherwise, desi trends in hip-hop were more of a 2002-2005 -era fad than anything else.

There's alot of great stuff in the asian/urban cross over, but i'd be wary of diggin too deep. It's mostly on an only-structural level of sampling. Even less inspiring is the huge percentage of bhangra tracks that are built on played-out hiphop samples. Still, a large # of diamonds exist in the rough and if yr searching for music rather than a big picture, you'll find some really fantastic tunes.

Its alright stuff, abit generic, but you can still feel the 'Eastern' vibes coming through, with traditional instrumental samples...its all abit too 'listen to me, my bassline is heavier than yours type shit'

But, its an example ......think the label is eastern pressure blard.....

Check Celt Islam (www.myspace.com/celtislam), serious use of Tabla and a good live sound working with all tempos. Also check Boka002, Boka003 & Boka004 for some good quality productions drawing heavily on the eastern sound. There's loads more tunes that sample bit and pieces here and there but the Boka stuff seems to respect the musical structure and not just reuse the sounds.

The one true sound will reflect all cultures equally and respectfully without diluting them or itself, and dubstep seems to be the only form of music that has gotten anywhere close to this so far.
