EPMD - proto dubstep?

Post by donruba » Wed Oct 29, 2008 11:04 am

I was listening to a fav old record of mine this morning, EPMD's debut album Strictly Business, and it just struck me how much the track I always liked best from the album, "Get Off The Bandwagon" sounds like pure halfstep murdah!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4anAKdiIf8Q

An instrumental of that tune, with the bass turned up a notch and the tempo slowed down a bit maybe, I would just love that.

So yeah, I've been into dubstep since 1988. When did you n00bs get on the bandwagon? Oh, 2006? 2004? Please...

how about schooly D ? BDP ? EPMD! Just Ice . . .
and some of the old electro joints is much of the same vibe . . .

but the original dubstep DON has to be Kool Keith . . .
bass driven spaced out beats from 83-2008 ?!!

anyway a legend . . .

and yes off-course i'v been dropping get of the bandwagon, but i can't claim to have done it since 88 . . .

Yeah, big Kool Keith tune! Although personally I still feel that the EPMD tune is more amazingly dubstep sounding.

Especially considered that EPMD's "Get off the bandwagon" is produced 1988. The Kool Keith tune is produced 2001. It was made after trip hop, after all kinds of experimentation when it comes to fusing hip hop with dance music had already been made.

then what about the electrostuff that preceded it? Kraftwerk, Zapp and so on? and what about all the 80's digital dancehall?
I don't think a slow beat and heavy bass alone, qualifies as 'dubstep'.

but there is no doubt in, that the same production techniques are used again, and again making it clear that producers get inspired by the old stuff they love.

If you're an old hiphop head then this is probably amongst many other electro influenced tracks the reason to why we love Dubstep so much

ha ha. i haven't heard this tune for a long time.

proto dubstep? well those pretty straight beats, semi-tone variation bassline and especially the title...

yeah there's a message there i think!

absolutely. so what's all the buzz now? dubstep would be around 20 years ago if there was the technology to make it :)
