There are so many racist rednecks in this country, it's hard to believe that he even got a shot at it. I know 80% of my office at work voted Mccain.

I voted Obama, but really, The republicans are gonna do everything in there power to not let him get anything done..... cause those jackasses in government are only thinking about the next election, and their partisan politics...all they do is argue. They sit around and bicker, and don't solve any of the real issues. They tackle stupid issues that really don't matter like: putting a statue of Bush up on the white house lawn...yay or nea?

Fuck.... getting the military spending cut in half, give everyone healthcare, raise the age limit of social security, make the government more efficient, get lobbyists OUT of government, etc. They will keep putting off the real issues until it's too late. I hope Obama will actually fix this stuff, but the chances aren't likely, people will get in the way as always.

why do people find it so hard to acknowledge that he is black and white?

because the "drop rule" has always applied. Do people think of Halle Berry as a beautiful mixed race woman or is she touted as being a black beauty? When people give props to Tiger Woods, are they saying this is a talented mixed race golfer? Seriously....drop rule has *always* applied...unless mixed race people have been able to escape racial stigma because of their white half....which I really don't have any evidence of. I'd like to see some, tho.

it *is* inspiring for young black kids because they might have a bit more faith that their race can't entirely be used against them. i mean, as much as people want to strip race from this, no one can deny the historic nature of this election. Hundreds of years of slavery in the US--Jim Crow laws--Brown v. Board of Ed--the idea that anyone even remotely non-white would be president is freakin huge. And you can even see the start of that in our media. Instead of only seeing mixed race women stand in for black women in commercials and on television, there are black women on TV getting house loans, taking care of their families, depicted as doing regular people stuff instead of the whole 15 men who's the Father and Cops bs that they've been given. Its nice to feel like maybe I'll get a chance to just be a regular person without the whole neck twirking, finger snapping, eye rolling stereotype that precedes me before I even open my mouth. The opportunity to get to be more than a vicious stereotype is staggering. And no one can take that from me.

Not saying things are fixed or over by any means. Racism isn't over. Homophobia isn't over. Sexism certainly isn't over. But it just looks like we can really start on that now. Here's to hoping that the election means more people care...and will be willing to commit to following through and holding his administration to some of the promises he offered.

i think it's kinda missin the point to see it this way. it's not whether he's specifically black, or equally black and white. the key issue here is that he's african american, of a darker skin tone. to elect him is an unbelievably enormous step for the country to take

prop 8 passed in cali too. 1 step forward, 5 steps back.

gay people are still second class citizens, and i am pretty pissed about that.

on a more positive note: one thing that was heartening for me, is that at my field office i was organizing, we had an irishman, an italian and a dutchman who came over just to knock on doors and get out the vote for obama. they knew that what we do affects the entire world, and they did the only thing they could do: talk to people and make them understand how important their vote was.

i am really proud of the rest of the world right now, too.
