Nope....this is a different WoogieDeadly Habit wrote:is this the woogie who did painting a rhythm on taciturn?W O O G I E wrote:I got some hardware and I love it. There are alot of cool synths out there that give a unique tone or sound that cant really be replicated using a VST.
Loose the idea that just because you are a broke pot head, you cant afford gear. If you stop looking at all the brand new gear and go on ebay or craigslist and start looking at the used shit....there are some really cool older/used synths/samplers ect one can buy for only a few hundred bucks....
They WILL sound different than your fruity loops synth...
Also, if you buy used it wont depreciate the way a new synth will....You could buy it, use it for a few months and then sell it if you arent feeling it.
And yes you dont need hardware to make good music, lots of ppl create amazing music everyday with only a computer and a midi controller, but if you are looking for something to spice up your creative experience go buy some gear!
dubstep producers with crazy hardware set-ups?

I disagree that the use of software is a defining element of dubstep...but it is certainly influenced by the tools used to create it and most dubstep artists have software setups...
I for one still prefer hearing a DJ spin tracks....even at a hip hop show I'd rather hear a DJ spin the instrumentals instead of having a full live band play them. Its just more raw that way.

Yo,
Just skimmed through the last page of posts after surfing on in from a google link.
Anybody can argue anything, any point of view, there are some valid points for and against hands on action, and mouse clicking. Ultimately though it comes down to what you want to do. I've used and owned a bunch of different hardware via midi set ups over the years - some of it just plain did my head in, but, dials and sliders are a lot of fun.. mostly I come at it from a set of one and twos, a pretty basic mixer, and maybe a guitar pedal and a four track.. but then I was born of that era. These days I've lived nomadicly for long enough that Garageband is keeping me well entertained.
A few main points to remember :
The Key to all forms of style is rocking.
It's not what you rock, it's how you rock it.
And some Bruce Lee quotes :
My style...? I suppose you could call it the art of fighting without fighting
Empty your mind... be formless... be shapeless...be water, my friend...
When there is no center and no circumference, then there is truth. When you freely express, you are the total style.
but basically we have only two hands and two feet... so styles tend to not only separate man because they have their own doctrines, and the doctrines became the gospel truth, that you cannot change, you know? but if you do not have style, if you just say here i am, as a human being, how can i express myself? totally and completely... that way, you won't create a style, because style is a crystallization, as opposed to a internal linkprocess of continuing growth...
There is a difference between copying a style, and having style. Think about the history of hip hop from Afrika Bammbatta coining the phrase (hip, short for hippie, from the swahillie meaning "aware"), through to NaS : Hip hop is dead... My point here is that everything has it's time, and in the scheme of things, it's not a lot of time. Get a hold of the Jungle Book/Bible "All Crew Must Big Up"... Learn about not just how to plug things in, programme them, or roots and culture, but the roots of your culture in the modern era, remember that the largest erogenous zone is the mind, radio is the theatre of the mind. Wheteher the (online?)station you are tuned into is selling you a consumable product or a concept - essentially they are still selling it to you (it at least costs you time), they (broadcasting people) are using music to do it - and they dont care how it was made, just that it turns you on. Think about it, how often do you go to a gig of an artist that gets no airplay, not often (maybe occasionally) I'll bet. Get the Bomb the Bass back catologue, check out Smith and Mighty, Kitachi, Nightmares on Wax, Burning Spear, Dry & Heavy, GLADIATORS... the list is endless, the franchise of "Dupstep" is limited. How ever you do your thing - do what you can, with what you have got, don't discect the cow to see what makes it tick - milk it.

BTW : Broke potheads... not an excuse and you know it. Think creatively
