All about Saul Williams. Particularly his first album.

This song " http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kRsgavuG4sg " - Black Stacey, is one of the most honest and moving pieces of hip-hop I've ever heard.

Don't really like much 'concious' hip-hop. I think 'Gangsta' rap generally has a more powerful message.

Big L, Wu-Tang, East Flatbush Project, Gang-Starr an all them chaps are straight heavy.

i get ripped on for loving it but get the dark sun riders' self titled album. its on island. its a proper album with a story, underrated imo.

there's lots of non gangsta hip hop out there.
maybe try special ed if you like it old skool?

you probably won't do much better than jeru the damaja & premier though

Alot of every style has been mentiond, alot of artists i wouldnt class as concious but they might have the odd peice.

I'd just listen to the bulk of the "classic" artsits, and the obviously more concious artsits (Mos Def, Talib, Gang Starr, Krs, Intelligent Hoodlum, Edo G etc off the top of my head) and work what sounds right from there.

Too much too miss if you start looking for a certain type of lyricist if you ask me.

Oh but by far (if you ask me anyway) the best emcee in terms of pure listenability, is AZ. Nothing really hits me like the best of his tracks.

AZ is crazy but he has the same problem as Nas had on his last couple of albums that he aint been getting beats that are good enough, simple as.

Nas especially; lord finesse, buckwild, diamond d, dj premier, q-tip, large professor - these are the dudes who should be producing his tracks, not nas and salaam remi collabs

Did you just read the production credits from Illmatic again?

Salaam Remi has produced some big tracks, Nas is just horrible at picking beats.

Oh yeh i would never claim AZ (replace with alot of emcees i really like) has worked on enough great beats. Apart from his first album none of them would be classed as great. But as an emcee, i really rate him.

I'd put Masta Ace Up there aswell, although again how concious he is, is debatable.

i didn't read them i tried reciting from memory lol but you get my point. he needs better production because his lyrics have stayed mostly on point his whole career
