There is no smoking in clubs in Toronto as well.
Been to dubstep parties in london and toronto and i can say, i like the smoking atmosphere a bit better. Dubstep and smoke seems to go hand in hand. I think the smoke effects the atmosphere at a party tho, a smokey room seems to slow the dancing down a bit...people seem to wanna just chill more.

this rule has been in effect for about 1 year in Austin.(the only city in Texas so far)
as a former smoker that quit because i dont wanna die early, it is pretty nice. ( i work in a pub )
there's nothing wrong with asking someone to go outside; why should i be subjected to your carcinogens? i dont want cancer.
also the way they have chosen to enforce this law is that the club will receive the penalties not the smoker, causing the clubs to really enforce it.
i've had to physically graab people and throw them out the door before, because they refuse to put the cigars out.
(Luckily the club we play dubstep at has decided to overlook our green smoking.)

fact is in dublin it did kill off a lot of the clubs because it coincided with later opening hours in pubs.
people are more likely to go to a pub because the smoking areas are usually more accesable and sociable then clubs which are usually underground and don't have an outdoor bit, or if they do is hard to get to from the venue.
most pubs adapted sharpish with all weather beer gardens some of which stretched the term 'outdoors' to the incredible

yeah the big arguement against the smoking ban was drop in bizness.
really we have not seen this to be true.
like you said, pubs got outdoor smoking areas quickly.
people still wanna get drunk or listen to music, so they will find a way to get their fix

this is the crux of it imo
people who hav given up forcing others to stop so they can continue going to traditionally smoky places (clubs, pubs etc..)
this will become another factor in my choices of going out. first it was the advent of "no trainers or caps" any club that says this i never go to. and now it will be "no smoking" so i will only end up going to events where this is either ignored or there is a fucking amazing smoking yard at the venue.
i remember going to New York last year and the fact i cudnt smoke anywhere made me want to get out of the city asap. not only did i hav to stand outside (which @ the time was well below zero) but jus buying cigarettes was a fuckin nitemare.
all this "police state" bullshit we are gettin in the UK is seriously making me think bout movin back to the Holland
btw. are there any other countries that are doin this besides English speaking ones?

i know a lot of people who don't like to go out simply because they don't want to deal with the smell at the club, and the smell after the club. i think this will draw more people with that attitude to the clubs.
but aside from that, why would you even want to smoke cigarettes? i have no problem with people smokin weed, but cigarettes are just nasty.

I thought clubs were supposed to be for careless debauchery,
tunes, drinks, drugs, smoking
if you want fresh air go for a picnic
maybe we should all go and noisy up the lake district in revenge...

Unfortunately the only things clubs are actually for are businesses that want to profit from alcohol sales.
I'm not sure the law really cares for weekenders.

They are doing a pretty good job of enforcing it in Scotland at the moment, where the ban on smoking in public places has been in operation since before summer.
There are some interesting statistics and surveys coming out on the effect of this ban is having in Scotland. The hardest-hit places seem to be local pubs in poor areas, the typical hard drinking old man's pub. In places like these the customers are often older and are seemingly reluctant (or unable) to keep getting up to go outside for a cigarette. Fashionable city centre bars have been less affected. Mainly because people often walk between them in a pub crawl stylee and can have a cigarette on the way. Also the customers are not quite such hardened smokers. I'm not really sure how it has affected nightclubs but it must be a total nightmare in the bigger clubs having to trawl all the way outside.
I don't know if anyone has mentioned this in this thread yet, but the difference between smoking cigarettes and smoking splits must be considered. A bouncer at the front door may be kind of unimpressed to have loads of folk standing round blazing. Do you guys think that this problem is going to affect the dubstep scene more than other scenes, due to dubstep's drug of choice.

we have no say.. input in any of these issues!! this is possibly fascism!!
you get to vote, then the peeps u vote for make sum choices. that's how democracy works.
yes but as we can all see in practice this is not working as well as it should... i can't be arsed to go into detail but i'm sure most people know what i mean... basically i reckon no matter who we'd voted for the outcome of the no-smoking in clubs thing would be the same probably... i.e. none of us had a choice in the matter...
i don't smoke myself so it don't bother me, but i think it's a bit shitty for those who do... as long as the gouvernment is raping smokers money with the huge amount of tax they put on cigarettes they should at least alow people to smoke them when and where they like...
peace
