The mixdown obssession can stifle creativity if it's the prime objective of the producer but I think peeps like Loefah and SLT MOB etc are too musically minded to let that be the main motivation for them.

The mixdown is definitely part of the equation but not a major part of it (maybe 15-20%- if that). The most major part of it iz the meditation that comes before it. In fact the meditation iz what's needed to give your tune the right mixdown!!

But yea I agree, that form of thinkin can lead to dead ends.

The vibes must come first, refinement comes after. Gotta get the hierarchy right. I think the right way to make music iz written in nature or the stars, whatever u wanna call it. "As Above So Below".

This is actually deeply connected to another post on here- u gotta question the "why" of what you're doing and then understnd the consequences of that "why". Seems like peeps dont even know the why let alone the consequences of that "why".

It's all about foresight not hype

drum n bass has always suckled cock iin my opinion and was therefore always gonna flop ,slower tempo jus kills it ,much more space .

so u think the '95 metalheadz producers weren't trying to get the cleanest mixdown, the moodiest atmospherics etc. ?

loefah was talking about striking a balance between mixdown n musicality, which is really a good thing imo...
when people start emphasising on mixdown too much things can go wrong idd, but i don't see it happening to dubstep too easily

Personally, I see mixing down and composition as two seperate aspects of production. Which may seem an obvious thing but I dont think, "right this melody sounds weak I think I will add loads of effects to it to make it sound better", I will just re-write it until Im happy with it then make it blend and sound better with effects.

Also I think Loefah was just stating he is aiming to get better and better and is continuely striving to achieve this. Not neccessarily saying he doesn't spend time on composition and focuses more on mix downs. Mixdowns are an essential part of music. Even if a tune has an amazing bass melody which is electric, if its mix down is shite then its not going to do itself any justice when played on a 10K rig. However a simple bass melody (one note bassline) that is mixed down perfectly will no doubt cause havoc on a 10K rig.

i've always been a big fan of tunes with imperfect mixdowns, i'd say that's why i worship all of the no u-turn stuff. it's all about just learning when to fucking quit dicking around with a mixdown and just move on to something else. a true artist knows when to let something go, or else you end up like george lucas.

you can't polish a greasy turd...

...but you can mould into something that doesn't resemble shit

chances are it'll still stink though...

...then again you can take a diamond and rub shit all over it and it'll stink too

I agree with you, but it seems like part of being a producer involves being a bit of a perfectionist. At least, this is a trait common to most producers I know personally. That's not to say that one should obsess over a mixdown to a point of paralysis, but keen attention to details that would seem minute to the average listeners, imo, is what seperates the average producers from the really great ones.

well, the only thing that has really skured me is vex'd remix of "knowledge". it had that vibe of some o dem remixes from the d&b continuum. it added nothing valuable to the existing trak and some key fully missed the vibe. truss me i like vex'd, i just hope this is not a trend that will continue (like when all the meatheads started making drum and bass).

I was JUST yesterday listening to the recent Paul Rose mix from Hotflush and thinking "goddamn if this doesn't sound like a slowed-down No-U-Turn record."
