yeah the last 2-3 months of 2008 in particular have been pretty mental in terms of quality, must have dubstep releases...there has been too many...
and 2009 looks like it is gonna be huge already aswell...
HDB018 : Joker - DigiDesign / 2000F & J Kamata - You Don't Know What Love Is
HENRY007 : Heny G - Soul Is Born Through Pain / Colours / Charger
HFT005 : Pangaea - Bear Witness / Mosaix
PIPS005 : Ramadanman - Humber / Humber (Sven Weisemann Remix)
not to mention all those forthcoming Deep Medi releases...

Except for Punk and Jungle I challenge that statement. You have to dig for good hiphop, you have to dig for good techno, and there is plenty of good rock music that doesn't get played.
But more or less I get the idea you have, I don't know that they are dead.

dubstep was best in 2005, still good in 2006, started to get weak in 2007, and it's hard to find the few good tunes in 2008
2004 is a little tricky, my favorite tune, Coki - Officer came out then, among other good tunes, but it wasnt exactly an obvious "scene" at that point

yeah... i just personally always look for what's going on now. what people are doing today.... and what they're thinking about for the future.

1999 was the golden year for dubstep. Everything since then is just trying to reclaim the glory of "Black Puppet".
