WHY does it need 1GB of ram to do NOTHING? WHY?
thus far i have not run any music software on it, but yeah, that 1gb ram usage to just sit there is NOT impressing me. ridiculous.
luckily i looked before buying to see if there were xp drivers for this machine, and there are. gonna be xping this fucker by the weekend.

the real problem with Vista is that it wasnt ready
AND
that the sound options on all Vista machines with a Realtek soundcard mean that you actually have no access to change things on the card, eventhough it can. AND that you need to install a heap of new codecs every time vista has an update, cos they never fix the problem with the cards/realtek.
overal i would say dont use it, use XP Pro 2 SP2 and wait a few years till its fixed

as a once in a while beta tester, i remember my first impression of vista aka longhorn as a rather disappointing one. Sad thing is, they didn't do much from beta to final.
Lets break MS down right quick (Not counting 2k and previous):
2003 Server: AWESOME!!! possibly the best GUI OS ever made.
XP: definitely a soild OS as long as you didn't get one of those comps that came with all the bundled crapware.
Vista: waste of time and a resource hog to say the least. to answer a question posted, yes Ive seen a vista machine with a virus, but the customer installed it unknowingly. (thank fuck im out of the IT world)
2008 Server: definitely, vista without the headaches. while i have only installed this OS once on my server, my impressions of it were quite surprising. Needless to say, with in a few hours after messing around with it, i deleted that partition and went back to 03 server.
Windows 7: ill tell ya next month when beta testing begins. LOL
bottom line: if your not goin linux, 2003 server all the way.
btw: if your wondering how i have all this shit, "MSDNAA" is all i need to say.

abandoned name
This. My opinion is that if they made it so you can't get rid of all the fancy glidy shit, then it would be shit. But you have the option to turf out what you don't want, so therefor it's good.TheAccuria wrote:Once you learn to customise it a bit and get rid of all the silly user account control shite it works really well.

You take all the pointless shit that you don't use out, and streamline it for you own personal use. The reason all the crap is in it is because who it's marketing for: the average know-nothing computer user who is pleased by nice graphics.
I've been using Vista on my laptop, with ableton, reason and renoise, extensively and I've not encountered a single problem. I've set it up how I think it's best for running these programs and it works flawlessly.
Learn how to use a computer and you're sorted.
