(Part 1)
In 3rd grade, I chose the praying mantis as my favorite "bug" to do a nature report on. I was fascinated by the structure and the human-like features of it. I had never seen a praying mantis in real life until 20 minutes ago. Today, my work partner Leslie and I met with two archivist from UCLA who are helping with the Yolanda Retter Vargas archives (my current long-term work project). It is a hefty and seemingly never-ending task to sort through the belongings of the late Yolanda, but today I felt this sense of calmness when the archivists asked to look in the garage -where Yolanda has left approximately 150 square feet of amazing historical madness. Leslie and I agreed to allow them to access her belongings (they are very precious and not just anyone can see them). I said jokingly "I'll do the honors!" as I pushed the garage door opener. The two archivist stood there, in awe at the massive wall of stuff. The garage is literally packed to the brim. However, last month I made a tiny narrow path that leads to the back of the garage, which does the job if you want to squeeze your way in there. We all managed to cram in together and as we reached the back, one of the archivists said "My goodness! Look at that mantis!" There she was. A perfectly perched praying mantis, staring straight at the four of us. I grabbed my camera and she allowed me to photograph her just inches away from where she was standing. I instantly felt this strong sense of peace overcome me. Her stance was highly symbolic. Here we all were, standing in this chaos of decades of history (or as Yolanda would call it, "herstory"), and on top of a pile of old photographs sits a tiny symbol of peace and quiet. I excused myself from the garage, ran inside to the office like a child on Christmas morning, and googled "praying mantis symbolism". What I read was awesome:
"The mantis comes to us when we need peace, quiet and calm in our lives. Usually the mantis makes an appearance when we've flooded our lives with so much business, activity, or chaos that we can no longer hear the still small voice within us because of the external din we've created.
After observing this creature for any length of time you can see why the symbolism of the praying mantis deals with stillness and patience. The mantis takes her time, and lives her life at her own silent pace.
These traits have lead the mantis to be a symbol of meditation and contemplation. In fact, in China, the mantis has long been honored for her mindful movements.
The mantis never makes a move unless she is 100% positive it is the right thing for her to do. This is a message to us to contemplate and be sure our minds and souls all agree together about the choices we are making in our lives."
This was so perfect. Perfect timing, perfect meaning, perfect place. And I'm usually not one to believe in "perfect". Not only had I been stressed lately from digging through, organizing, allocating and archiving the belongings of the dear Yolanda Retter, I was also overwhelmed by other challenges happening in my life at many different levels. Whether it was irony, a true blessing from the unknown, or a channeling from Yoli - this praying mantis brought peace and clarity to my life today. The mantis was confirmation that Leslie and I made the best decision for what happens to Yoli's archives. They are going to her second home - the UCLA library - and are in great hands of people who knew her well.
This mantis allowed me a moment of silence...to stop and think: "No matter how great the challenge may be, I have the confidence to approach those challenges with patience, a clear open mind, and fearless decision-making."
I now feel comfortable moving at my own pace - one lesson at a time.
Sometimes the tiniest sign carries the largest message.
