***RINSE 11 MIXED BY ONEMAN OUT MARCH 1st 2010 !!!***
Ok ok ok woah... first up EPIC POST coming atcha
But
Things def need to be cleared up a bit here...
First of all Bird Flu, Boyz and most of the Kala album was produced by Switch (Dave Taylor) the fidgety wonkey house producer also known as Solid Groove and has done huge remixes for Spank Rock and the like...I would assume most of you guys know Switch? Maybe not sorry not trying to sound condescending or what have you.
Second Paper Planes is actually coproduced by Diplo AND Switch and Diplo did the majority of her first album Arular. I know from interviews and what not she does have influence and of course some oversight, but Diplo and Switch have been her boys in the booth
As for the lyrics I suggest you open your ears a bit and listen. There are many actually very worldy socio-politically aware such as the tune $10 and $20 - $10 on her first LP and $20 on her second which
Lyrics to $20
War, war, war!
Talkin' bout y'all's such a bore
I'd rather talk about moi
Like do you know the cost of A.K.'s up in Africa?
Twenty dollars ain't shit to you
But that's how much they are
So they’re gonna use the shit just to get by
Is those diamonds helpin' ya?
Don't you like my bandanna?
My stains hang low on my shirts like aiy aiy aiy
Got monkey brains and banana
I'll hit you with my antenna
Put soap in my eye
Make it red so I look rawr, rawr, rawr
So I woke up with my holy Quran
And found out I like Cadillac
We shooting 'til the song is up
Little boys are acting up
And baby mamas are goin’ crazy
And the leaders all around cracking up
We goat rich, we fry
Price of living in a shanty town
Just seems very high
But we still like T.I.
But we still look fly
Dancin' as we’re shootin' up
and lootin' just to get by
With your feet on the air and your head on the ground
Try this trick and spin it, yeah
Your head ‘ll collapse when there's nothing in it
And you'll ask yourself:
"Where is my mind?"
War, war, war!
Who made me like this?
Was it me and God in co-production?
My devil's on speed dial
Every time I take the wrong direction
All I want is one thing and that is what you want
Sometimes I go lose my mind, then I feel numb
There's 24 hours in a day
I used to split it 8-8-8
8 work
8 sleep
8 for play
Now I give it all it takes
Got people on the Internet
A new life for the intellect
People judge me so hard
'Cause I don't floss my titty set
I was born out of dirt like
I'm porn in a skirt
I was a little girl who made good with all what I blurt
I put people on a map that never seen a map
I show 'em something' they've never seen
And hope they make it back
With your feet on the air and your head on the ground
Try this trick and spin it, yeah
Your head’ll collapse when there's nothing in it
And you'll ask yourself:
"Where is my mind?"

Also just to back it up- pulled from the wiki article but you can go and search out the articles for proof if need be
Paper Planes" was written and produced by M.I.A. and Diplo, recorded in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn, and includes kids from Brixton singing on the chorus.[4][5] Additional production is by Switch who mixed the track in London.[1]
In an interview in late August 2008, Arulpragasam described the song as being a satire "about people driving taxicabs all day and living in a shitty apartment and 'appearing' really threatening to society. But not being so. Because, by the time you’ve finished working a 20-hour shift, you’re so tired you [just] want to get home to the family".[6] She added that she felt listeners could choose how to interpret the gunshots and cash register ringing in the song's chorus.[6] "People could say, 'Oh my God, this song is so violent,' but at the same time, there was a war in Iraq. I felt like certain people made so much money from selling ammunition and military weapons and stuff, and killed a million people, and it wasn't even an issue that was raised," Arulpragasam told the Associated Press.[7] She has expressed surprise at the song's wide commercial success, telling Rolling Stone in October 2008 "I always took pride in being a little underground — it really is a very unlikely record to cross over."[8]

The last line sums it all up for me and why im making this post. The only reason i know a bunch of shit about her is I had an ex girlfriend who LOVED her just from randomly getting her early early mixtape work with diplo off the internet while at her very eccentric stoner friends house whos all about this buisness.
It's been hilarious to see the evolution over the past 4 years or so and has been absoltley nutty to see MIA in the light shes in just given where shes come from, what her music is about and how its been commercially spawned and sold as something quite nasty - which really - is eons beyond.
A gift and curse I suppose -
End Sorry

on the production note:
most of kala is jointly written and produced by MIA herself and switch - diplo co produced 3 tracks. MIA on the other hand coproduced 8 of the tracks.
diplo produced almost none of arular, people just assume he did because he got a lot of publicity for 'discovering her'. the only track he had a hand in was bucky done gun - he sent her the loop, which her and others worked into a full track.
she had a massive moan in an interview about how everybody assumes that she doesn't produce any of the beats, and diplo does.
