Why Do You Produce?

Just wondering what makes you wanna produce, why you do it, what makes you spend a shit load off money on software, hardware ect and spend hours sitting by ya set up making beats?

I can't really find a reason why I do make tunes, except that I really like to do it. As lame as that may sound, I don't have any other reason than that. I love music, both making it, and listening to it. So my love for music fuels my desire to try and create works of my own.

After being in a band for years i realised that you're essentialy married to your band members, and it can be a full time job with little pay. When you produce, you're in charge of the whole creative process and your time.

Got into mixing when I was 16 and slowly moved on to producing at the start of this year at the age of 18.

I got into the idea of producing more after finding out that many dubstep producers use FL to create there music, which inspired me to have a go and I havent looked back since.

i've always listened to alot of different music, but mostly metal/grunge and untill a few years ago only crust'ish metal, black metal, crustpunk, hardcore etc, and i was like "fuck electronic music, its all cheesy beats and lame people on drugs" but then one day in early spring 2007 i was doing some school work with a friend when he said to me "my cousin from england just emailed me some bass heavy music, i know you're not into electronic music, but you gotta listen to this!" and i was like, "what ever"... and when the bassline dropped i was like... "what the fuck!!" i got it on my ipod and heard that in the middle of the mix some guy says "This is the Digital Mystikz taking you through the sounds of dubstep", so when i came home i google'd "dubstep," and since that day i've been hooked... later on i found out it was "Earth a run red by Mala" i had heard. Then a few months later i was at a party with a DJ playing dubstep, when i thought "hmm... i wonder how you make that music" and since i had already learned myself the basics of drumming, i couldnt see any reason not to try this out too... well it took me about a year to get started, but here i am.

Now i'm 18, and i cant stop making beats n basslines! i think its a great way to spend your time when you got alot of time on your hands, and i like when other people hears/listens to my music, and usually they're pretty positive about it, so ofcourse thats something that keep me working on it too. and like some other guy wrote, i also like the little rush you get when you make up something sick

It makes me happy, makes me feel I'm somewhat good at something Actually it can both make me really happy and really sad, depending on inspiration (or lack of )
Keeps my attention focused, that's the longest hobby I've undertaken so far. I hate big pauses though, but they appear from time to time.

Going on what scarabza said how old are you(if ya dont mind saying), how long you been producing and did you produce before dubstep or did you start producing because of dubstep

I'm 19, soon to be 20 I've been involved with making beats for... 5-6 years now, gradually becoming more aware of the technical side, didn't really care about it back then. I started out making rap beats and got into dubstep quite later (this year actually).

Myself. Had a bit of advice here and there, but never went to any courses. Had piano lessons when I was about 5 years old, but it wasn't really interesting to me But my parents couldn't keep paying the tuition so i had to stop going to these lessons. There was an economic crisis at that time. People could buy one loaf of bread with their salaries.

Ten years later i got into music production and wished I never stopped playing the piano though You never know

My keyboard techer gave me 2 weeks worth of scales when i was twelve, then said fuck it, put a copy of cakewalk 2 on my PC, got me some midi leads, and ive never looked back since.

all sorts of reasons these days, but I remember a particular winter back in 03-04 where making beats got me through some real bad times.

I produce because I have always had a love for music, always tried to write my own music in high school on my saxophone, and I have always had music in my head for as long as I can remember. I have just been drawn to music, most of my friends don't understand, and can't relate to constantly going through every day hearing sounds, and rhythm's, and what not in my head which is why I like this forum so much - many like minded people. I'm about to turn 29 & really just started seriously trying to learn my DAW in the past 4 months - I do it for the love of music, to remain creative, and because it's nice to have something to show for my time other then being able to talk about what TV show I watched last night.

One of these days I'll be skilled enough with my DAW to replicate what I hear. Until then I will keep plugging away learning, trying new things, and spinning records on my decks.

When I started I saw it as a way of getting more DJ bookings, now its more about making tunes / being creative than ever getting my name around as a DJ.
