sounds like boyband/dubstep vivisection (IMO).Tomity wrote:I dont know what to make of this. Instrumental sounds pretty good but the vocals are a bit too smooth for my liking

Pinch tracks with Juakali are wicked I reckon, same for Get Up (can't remember the singers name...), but generally I liked most of Underwater Dancehall.
Also, Fever by Vaccine has some some female vocals, on a dark tip!
Heavy
Generally, its been said above, but some vocals can be great, others can be shit. People just have to have a reason to use them. If they are just chucked on for effect, then its pointless.

Commercialism = record labels telling artists what to write (i.e. the lastest fad/the latest artist they haven't got on their roster) or they won't release it = bad for everyone.
Accessible vocal tracks always lead to this, but there's enough gnarley dubstep to keep the mainstream properly away.

i've still got that posh rap on cd somewhere lol seem to remember there was meant to be a rabbi effort as well

wasn't into juakali vocals either, but couple of the tracks i'd already heavily listened to as instrumentals in that mah mix. So just sounded bit werid once heard vocals over them.

I think there's nothing wrong with vocals as long as they're interesting & well placed. Singing or spitting.
MC's can be cool, but they have to back off the tracks a bit especially live - D&B nights where it sounds more like a rhyming dictionary book club reading than a dance anyone? No thanks.
When an MC doesn't try to take over a tune & says something interesting it totally MAKES a tune a killer IMO.

Couldn't have said it better myself.pacman wrote:so basically you fear that dubstep will become mainstream? so what? mainstream doesn't always equals bad music. and it is opportunity to bring more people to the scene. more money = more exposure = more people. and if mainstream isn't what suits you there is alway underground. i mean do what you like and feel. music has no limitations. if you feel like adding vocals do it. if not don't. simple as that. there is no real and fake music. people who think like that are assholes with no life.
just my 2 cents

I'm constantly being told that my music is too musical! Or that a tune sounds "progressive" cos its got music in it not just a bassline! Although I do write (progressive) wobble I can understand where the 'wobble haters' are coming from as it would be fucking tragic if it became the norm for the more accessible labels (ie. those that actually give u the time of day not your standard big label with full schedules for the next 5 yrs) to reject the sort of innovative minimal music that started the scene bcos it doesn't sell as well as slowed down jumpup drum n bass. Then we'd have to start another genre all over again!!!XOR wrote:Commercialism = record labels telling artists what to write (i.e. the lastest fad/the latest artist they haven't got on their roster) or they won't release it = bad for everyone.
The problem is that u can't always tell whats gonna sell well bcos of what style it is - ok deep sells less than jumpup but hows an artist ever going to become one of those deep artists that defies the trend and makes it bigtime (and without being hated!) if their label is constantly steering them off course or making them feel that deep & meaningful tune that tooks weeks of hard labour 2 perfect is inferior to something written in 5 minutes bcos it doesn't shift as many units.
I think dubstep is crying out for female vocalists and more of them would be a great thing despite the innevitable cheese fest BUT the problem is finding good vocalists. I don't record vocals in my own studio due to the "X-Factor" syndrome - its well embarrasing when someone a) can't sing in tune but thinks they can b) can't write lyrics but think they can!
I just hope we don't get to a situation in a few years time where u need to wobble AND have a (cheesy) female vocalist in your tune to be taken seriously!!!
I've been getting more and more into vocals these days, I think what people are saying about live mcs at dubstep nights is true, they just shout random shit that means nothing and adds nothing to the tune, and usually when you're listening out for your favourite bit in the track!
But yeah, those tunes by Cotti with Doctor are really good, same with the more grimey tunes like that Splurt remix by Skream, that's how it should be done I reckon.
