if i was a label owner who was 'all about the money' i would be a fucking idiot if i started releasing a genre of music where 1000 sales is considered a good result! likewise if i was a promoter - if i wanted to make money i'd be booking eric morillo or roger sanchez, not someone who plays bass music with no catchy vocals and scarcely a melody
fuck the music industry

mate, it's probably obvious but if people are involved in dubstep then it's highly unlikely that they're all about the money.

I hear ya guys for sure, and I'm sorry if I sound like a whiny little bitch, but im really not. I guess the thing that gets me is, well take this for example. I go to one of the clubs around here and put together a mix of both original material and some other 320's to give to the owners. We sit down, they listen to it, and in so many words they're like "what the hell is this? we play top 40 and the local rap station around here, we're not sure people will like this....blah blah blah" In my head I'm thinking, I've worked over plenty of crowds with this very same material at a lot of underground and house parties, but because it's not what's 'hot' around here, they don't even give it a chance, and I guess that's what really bums me out more than anything. I understand everyone has got to make a living, but there's modesty and then there's greed. These guy's are driving their brand new huge gas guzzling trucks and living the life in their overly compensated houses up on the hill, and they run the club to support this life style rather than to expose good music., No one's perfect, sorry for complaining, I'm just a hippy and I should probably just go live in a giant pine tree
ah well if you're trying to get gigs playing dubstep in a mainstream club then i admire your optimism! good luck and keep trying!dank wrote:I hear ya guys for sure, and I'm sorry if I sound like a whiny little bitch, but im really not. Man, I just checked your myspace and you're in LA.....Loads of dubstep nights around there (as I am sure you're aware of) why don't you send stuff to actual clubs what put on the music you're playing?dank wrote:I hear ya guys for sure, and I'm sorry if I sound like a whiny little bitch, but im really not. bro in SF you've already got Sep with dubmission on sunday nights, Maneesh/Kush/Kameleon/Ripley/Jimmy, etc w/ Surya on the monthly tip, Grime City, the Heyoka crew, An-tenn-ae... Djunya, Juju, and the Narco.HZ crew, Jus Wan, Jimmy love doing his Friday thing, Amar doing hip & bass....dank wrote: heh, i'm pretty sure it says bay area, ca, but please correct me if im wrong, maybe you're seeing something i'm not
basically there is a huge movement in SF as far as dubstep and general underground, bass-heavy dance music goes. Reach out. Build Alliances. Pretty much every person in that list is a down-to-earth, music loving guy/gal who's been in the same spot as you are now. This music is nothing if not community driven. The nights are out there!

dude bay area has a much better scene than 99% of anywhere else in the US. you cant expect to headline some mainstream guido'd out club when nobody even knows who you are though. like tarekete said hit up some of the big names around there and see if you can get opening slots. (bassnectar also comes to mind... hes a pretty chill guy and i played a show with him a while back over here on the east coast)
amen brotha, i know, the shit is goin off with the sf underground right now...THAT is where i should be looking, i'll quit complaining...TeReKeTe wrote:bro in SF you've already got Sep with dubmission on sunday nights, Maneesh/Kush/Kameleon/Ripley/Jimmy, etc w/ Surya on the monthly tip, Grime City, the Heyoka crew, An-tenn-ae... I've DJed at Fabric, The Cross and Ministry of Sound a number of times and either got paid nothing or next to nothing. Unless you're a huge name they look at it like you're getting exposure as some of your "payment". Also, if I'd have had just a couple of friends along they wouldn't have been best pleased.dank wrote:i offered to play for free....and, through experience, i know my music and mixes have gotten people down and dirty at plenty of parties..mycota wrote:the promoter asking you how many people you can draw does not make them an asshole it ensures that they aren't gonna lose money on you...
However, if you're talking about a tiny little bar in the middle of nowhere, fair enough.

well, keeping their club open and/or label afloat is what puts food on their table...dank wrote:man, you go to any club or talk to any label and all they want to know is how many people can you draw. the music comes secondarily to money and it's bullshit. there's so much good music out there and i want to share it with people, but i guess they don't call our scene underground for no reason. i'm just venting, im sorry. it just saddens my soul to know that all most people care about is money, there's so many better things, like dubstep, stupid amounts of bass, and bone crushing rhythms, ya know? anyone on the same page?
If it's not about money for you then why contact a label at all?? Could it be because you cant afford to release your music yourself? Well, either could any label if your music isn't going to guarantee them sales. Money is not a thing to be hated,[imo] because in real life it is one of our top necessities.
