monitor face off!
evening all,
looking to purchase myself some cheap monitors just to upgrade from my crappy hifi system. by cheap im looking at around £125
i know, i know. i shoudl be looking to spend more but i really don't have the disposable income!
anyway ive narrowed it down between either
a pair of Alesis M1 active 520's
http://dolphinmusic.co.uk/shop/flypage/product_id/7820
or Fostex PM 04's
http://dolphinmusic.co.uk/shop/flypage/product_id/27866
anyone own/heard either of these?
any advice apart from 'spend more money' would be sweet
peace, Josh

Not heard any of those 'in action' but just a suggestion if you have a amp (guessing you don't since you're looking at active)but the Alesis Monitor Ones are 100 and they're stupidly good I'd go for them, personally ..I have a small room so I got Edirol MA-15Ds, used to have DS-30As but they was to big for my room and they sounds pretty damn good I must say - spesh as I don't really make sub-heavy stuff anymore.
I have heard more Alesis monitors than Fostex so i'd go for the M1s

ive got the Alesis 520s at home in my wee bedroom studio and they do the job fine, id recommend a little sub to go with them tho (eg Event S100 which is cheap but good). They're not a patch on the Genelecs and Mackies I use at work but my mixes transfer over pretty well... a friend of mine has lovely Focals at home and even he was impressed with the sound of the 520's. Really good for the cash i reckon!

I have heard good things about those Samsons. They are dirt cheap too! but like you say I wouldn't want to mess around with dubstep on anything less than an 8" woof. I'd recommend a good set of cans if you can't save up that much.Depone wrote:Imo, i hate the sound of the alesis. Had them in my old college studio, and did a blind test with the samson rubicons, and samson blew them totally out of the water!
I seriously would wait for a better pair with at least 6" cone for makin dubstep (all tho its recommended to get an 8" pair).
At the end of the day... You get what you pay for. You will regret it if you buy cheap monitors now, however enticing they look. Keep savin man, every little penny helps.

Look into getting some KRK Rokit's. I've got a pair of Rokit 5's they seem to do the trick and they're a fair price.J-sh wrote:evening all,

I know theyre a diff speaker but I heard the Fostex PM05's today and they sounded pretty tight. The dude was saying the 04's are excellent monitors for the money and fostex do do a sub to much for about 200 squids so could always grab one of them a few months down the line.
All this said Ive not heard the Alesis so can't comment.
Bit of a waste of everyones time really ha!
