The Internet is what you make it.
It's not like it was designed by some omniscient, Big Brother-like organization for the purpose of providing some fantasy world parallel to reality.
It's simply a collection of interconnected computers. This thin film of a fantasy world running on top of it is the result of applications that can interact with each other. The only reason it looks to some people like it's a fantasy world at all is because all they're using it for is social networking.
These days, social networking does comprise a large part of the Internet, but it's not like it's the only thing out there. The social aspect of the Internet is, in many ways, the only accessible portion of the Internet for your average computer user looking for convenience and simplicity.
While the Internet surely did usher in a new age of senseless and hopeless youngsters (hyperbole), it's not like that's the Internet's fault. Banning somebody is a construct of a community managed by some application software. It's not like you can just ban somebody from the Internet. Sure, you can ban them from your forum, or your newsgroup, or what have you, but keep in mind, that has very little to do with the Internet itself.
Like I said, the internet simply provides an interconnection between a number of computers; what the users do with those computers is entirely up to them.
The Internet is not fake, it's very real... what is fake is a sense of reality sometimes promoted and driven by the user community.
