Ive got the HS80M they are SICK!!! Tested them against the KRK 8 and Tapco S8 for hours and liked the sound of the Yamahas the best. Top end is very transparent and bottom end is very well defined. They go down to 40Hz, so theres no urgent need for the sub. Choosing monitors is a matter of taste of course, if you can hear em out yourself.

AFAIK the HS10's are well known for being wide spread, but they defo have flaws in their linear response. Yamaha has improved that on the HS80M...

if you choose the 80's you won't need the sub if the room you mix (produce) in is not acoustically treated and large. generally, subs in small rooms just mess up the sound and bass sounds really muddy.

The 80's are good value for money.

I have the hs80ms and really enjoy working on them.

Still getting used to working on actual monitors (been using headphones and PA cabs for years) so it definitly is taking some getting used to.

I was originally planning on picking the sub up at the same time but after getting them home a set up I am glad that I did not.

The monitors by themselves work well accross the whole spectrum.

I'll get the sub after the room is treated.

Get 'em. Best bang for your buck in that price range for sure. I currently use them...

The sound flat as far as my ears go. I have not noticed any specific frequency range emphasized or diminished.

I checked running a number of patches from an Oberheim Matrix-6 played accross the full range keys to see if anything sound to bright or muted. I will be testing the room with a spectrum analyzer this weekend and will have a better answer then. Trying to optimize the back panel settings for my room.

As to the second part I am just getting setup up for recording (mostly focussed on live performance) so I can not answer that directly but I have spoke with a few cats who said that (although not as NS10s) a good mix on the hs80ms transport well to other systems.

I'll know more in the next month or so. I got them right before the holidays because i got lucky on the price.

I just got me a set of KRK VST6's for £400 on eBay. Sound on Sound gave a decent review, saying they were really big competitors in their price range. A lot of people I know use KRK Rokit's for Hip Hop productions and they have basically said that how your mix sounds on them is pretty much exactly how it will sound on a Club system. I'd suggest having a listen.

Sound on Sound also gave the HS80's a good review, you can see the article here. However, they are supposed to be very similar to the NS10's, just with better bass response. I used NS10's for 2 years, and they are good for recording and producing rock/pop with (which is why they became an industry standard) but the one Drum & Bass song I produced on them just didn't cut it. They're not really good for 'Bass' music.
