Mixing with Ableton

Post by longgone » Fri Jan 23, 2009 2:48 am

Hi gang,

just got my hands on a new version (perfectly legal, of course) of ableton live 7 which excites me greatly. before i start getting into the nitty gritty of working out just how the hell to use it, i was wondering if it is possible to mix tracks with ableton and vinyl simultaneously? i have so many tracks on mp3 which i want to use in my studio mixes but no cdjs so i'm hoping this is possible!

if all goes well should be able to post a mix up here soonish. peacety.

you can, i have never done it though...
on 7, you have a nudge left/right in the top left controls.
so you run ableton into a mixer, and cue it up with the tempo and nudging.
you couldnt really do it with previous versions, as it didnt have the nudge. you could only mix vinyl out of it

hope it helps

5 had the nudge too... at least my version does.

Its touchy though... although the last time I tried it was with a kinda lame midi controller. I would deffo recomend a dj-style midi controller... theres a lot of good ones out there now.

if you have a midi controller, you can set a knob or a slider as a pitch control.

typically what i do is set up a slider and reverse the max/min values on the bpm. max 138/min 142 in midi settings set to a slider (so it's the same as a technics pitch control with -up and +down). you can change how sensitive it is by giving it greater values, but you lose a lot of control the further away from the middle bpm you go.

i have never bothered with the nudge feature at all. this way works much more like a turntable for me, although you will have to get used to a teensy bit of latency.

feel free to hit me up on aim if you want more help. :)
