Reason 3 vs Reason 4

Post by requiem.mf » Wed Jan 28, 2009 6:42 pm

I'm considering upgrading but not completely convinced that 4 is a big step up the evolution ladder. Upgrade from 2.5 to 3 was definitely worth it.

Aside from Thor is there much of value added?

Get rid of the vs in your post cos its not even a battle. No reason at all not to upgrade to 4 unless your a little woman scared of a little change

A year ago this wouldn't be a question at all, but with economy getting all tricky need to weight the options thoroughly.

Pure fantasy! Utter filth & lies! :P

------------------------

The subjective & unbiased truth:

Reason 4 has several new features as you already know. Any decision to upgrade should be based solely upon your actual audio processing needs, not just Versionitis.

The new features in summary;
  • *Thor
    *A new sequencer & arrangement system
    *The arpeggiator device
    *The Regroove mixer (Adds shuffle & swing to beats)
    *A new devices window allowing users to drag and drop devices into the rack
Where does this leave us? What are the pro's and cons?

Let's discuss each new feature in turn:
  • *Thor (Over-rated, ugly, fidly & badly outdated. Thor does nothing other synths haven't been doing better for years).
    *A new sequencer & arrangement system. (Awkward and counterintuative. Will reduce your workflow rate until you've taken the time to re-adjust).
    *The arpeggiator device (Pretty fucking cool! 8) Too little to late however...)
    *The Regroove mixer (Great if you like to use quanisation grooves in your music).
    *A new devices window allowing users to drag and drop devices into the rack (Gets in the way when you're trying to work. Luckily can be switched off.)
Overall, I find the new device window annoying, the new device default patches also annoying (although they can be switched off), the new sequencer sickening, and Thor a pile of turd. Reason 4 couldn't be further from Ableton if it tried.......* :o

---------------------------------------

Alternatives;

If you're looking to expand your tool set and midi capabilities, I'd fully recommend Cockos Reaper. As well as being cheaper, actually supporting audio recording, having Rewire, DX & VST plugin capabilities + more, the midi editing is good.

The piano roll looks & acts similar to that of Reason 3, although it is far more flexible and intuitive. It was the midi editor that Reason 4 should have shipped with but didn't. :(

---------------------------------------

I hope my unbiased and frank review will help guide you in your decision. Why not download the demos of each software mentioned, and test the features you're looking for?! :)

*(Please bare in mind that I am in fact a paragon of virtue and the ultimate font of knowledge in this area :P)

I am. Is that considered crazy?

I prefer clean software. I started off with cracked versions and got really inconvenienced with losing tracks time after time.

change is good, roll with the times dont be scared of change lol. so they left a couple of features out, the new features are all good, i think the automation lanes are superb and im getting sounds out of thor i havent got anywhere near achieving with malstrom and subtractor.

doesnt take that long to get your head around the new set up at all, i guess some people are going to love it and some arent. try the demo if you are that unsure and see for yourself it may notbe for you

My pleasure. :)

Very true. This reason alone inspired me to learn to rewire and get some of those lovely VSTi's that are available! :D

Also reasonable suggestions tbh. ;)
