So the 'Get Mad' story for me goes as follows...
I was asked to play a few months in advance, I was told I would be paid £100 and have my travel covered, so all in all, a pretty sweet deal. A few days before the event, the promoter asked if I could pay my own train fare and he would refund it with cash on the night. This set me back roughly £90, a last minute train from Manchester to London doesn't come cheaply. I arrive with a few mates 2 hours early, go grab a beer in Camden then head down to the venue. I got to play about on the system for a bit beforehand, it was a really nice setup, decent working turntables which I was not expecting at all, and a few of the other were DJs knocking about (which were mostly very sound guys), everything was really chilled and going smoothly. The opening DJ didn't show up, so I got to do an extra set which was pretty nice, I'd brought enough stuff with me to play for a good long while so I wasn't too fussed about doing overtime, things were all running nicely.
I then had to swap my set time twice with 2 other DJs, because others hadn't showed up, people couldn't get there on time etc, which is where things started going a tad pear shaped. I was not officially playing til 2.30, but it had turned midnight and I was beginning my third fill in set. There were nowhere near enough people in the club to make a profit, and alot of people were looking for the promoter, who hadn't been seen for an hour. Headliners were on at this point, I was watching EL B do his thing, Coki was on his way (he had flown in from Outlook), and Hizzle guy was playing in another room. It was then that I heard some commotion about the promoter not having any money at all to pay anyone, so Hizzle Guy and EL B Both stopped playing. There was no music playing in 2 of the 3 rooms, one of the DJs tried to steal a CDJ from the club as payment, which prompted a robbing spree where several DJs on the night (Including myself), had their headphones and other valuables nicked. The DJ stealing the CDJ was caught by security, and by now most DJs who were booked to play, had totally lost their shit and were on a hunting spree for the promoter, out to just kick the crap out of him. Security somehow managed to sneak him out, there were gangs of people out to beat seven shades of shit out of him that were increasing in number by the minute, til there was a good crowd of around 50 people outside that were asking around for his address, so they could rob him and rape his girlfriend, for swindling them out of £100. The club had shut by this point, and only 3 out of the 40 or so DJs that got booked were paid.
Several people were stranded, my friends and I (along with a few of the other stranded DJ's) had to go and sleep in the underground and get on the first train home. I was £90 out of pocket with my non refunded train ticket, £100 down for not being paid, and minus a pair of HD25s. It took me a good few weeks to recover the lost funds and get new headphones again, and it had emerged by now that the promoter was only 17. He disappeared from the face of the earth, nobody has spoken to him since, and it was calculated he was about 3 grand down.
I lost alot of respect for some DJs that were there, and how quickly they were resorting to violence as a means to solving their problems. Professionalism had gone completely down the shitter for the evening it seemed.
Funny thing was, the name of the night.
Exile : Get Mad.
Promoter went into Exile, then everyone got Mad.
