Given that most people haven't heard of the company I work for (in fact, I'm always surprised with how few Investment Banks and Hedge Funds people have heard of), I'm not sure "public image" is that important to them... but I'm sure there's a bit of that in it. Personally, I expect there's also a fair bit of wanting to help their fellow Man, too.... when I first saw the devestation, my first instinct was to find out how I could give some cash to help... I imagine it was also the first instinct of a lot of company directors all over the world.
