Lol, surely you just described every piece of music ever made??

To add something of value... I think people hate on Skrillex because he's put out an EP and called it dubstep. To people that have been into dubstep since it started, it's a bit offensive. People with little to no knowledge of the scene are "having a pop" at a dubstep record and getting it miles off. This new wave of dubstep is really a whole different genre and it should have been given a name from the start. The term "bass music" or "UK Bass" hasn't really taken off. Then we could have avoided the hate altogether
As much as I'm loathe to wade into the middle of this retarded back and forth, I just wanted to point out that no he didn't really put out an EP and call it dubstep. I've never seen anything out there from him where he's hyping himself up as captain dubstep or anything like that. On beatport he lists two tracks off that EP as "dubstep" (The title track and that song Scatta), the rest of the EP is listed either as Electro House or Progressive House. Both of the songs he lists as dubstep, rhythm and style wise are along the lines of what's going on in the "filthy" side of the dubstep thing right now. If you don't like the sort of thing and don't like his music in general more power to you, but don't sit there and pretend like the guy is out there going "Oh yeah, I'm the new big thing in dubstep and blah blah" because he isn't...at all.

On a more general note, I must have missed the part where producers being out there making the filth stuff prevents there from being producers out there pushing stuff closer to the original sound. I guess once we've reached our allotment of tunes for the year the powers that be go "Ok boys, shut her down". On the one hand, people are pointing out correctly that there are a ton of people putting out good quality deeper stuff, so it's out there and still thriving and on the other hand some people freak out and throw out all this hyperbolic nonsense like they're fighting some existential war for it's survival. That stuff exists side by side with the filth stuff now and that's going to be the case tomorrow and the next day and the day after that, so what's the problem?

And don't get me wrong, I empathize with it being irritating when people jump into something later in the game and don't really understand the roots. I grew up in the punk rock scene and watched the same thing happen with various sub genres for years where people would latch on to a sound that was out there and jump in and not know what they're talking about. It's irritating but it's a fact of life in music. It certainly doesn't mean you need to act like a pack of miserable stnuc about it because that's just as if not more irritating.

Another thing people don't recognize sometimes, especially as it applies to American fans is that everyone when they're exposed to things applies their own cultural lens to their understanding of it. Over hear we generally don't have all this reggae west indian islander music as a significant part of our culture. Most people here, I'd venture 80% plus, don't have a clue what dub reggae is about. Probably even less know anything about Grime or UK Garage or any of that type of stuff. What we do have in spades as a cultural influence is hip hop, and because of the tempo of dubstep I'd wager most people apply that lens to it, and hip hop culture over here is much more about "hype" and aggression and stuff than any of the early roots of the genre. I was listening to Coki's remix of Burning in the car today and that kind of hit me, obviously anyone would recognize the reggae influence in that song but Americans also are going to apply a hip hop lens to something like that. American musical culture in general it appears to me is also more aggressive and A.D.D. period. That being the case is it really any wonder that the more hyped up and aggressive side of the genre is taking off the way it is over here? It's something people are going to have to get used to also cuz I really don't see Americans suddenly losing their taste for the hype shit and it going away anytime soon.

Anyway, my more than two cents on some of the stuff I've been reading on here, and the last post I'm gonna get into on the hype vs deep thing.

It's just the blind hate that pisses me off, really. Sure it's the internet, but in that same light I can say that anyone who thinks his production is sub-par or assumes shit about him because of his looks or friendly demeanor are fucking idiots, to say the least.

Good idea, remember 'haterz' also. The z at the end makes an already irritating phrase even worse
