the way i look at is is at least some of the companies and govt have learned maybe instead of dlc or war on drugs they should invest in decent comp security and encrytion

cDc has been making a comeback of sorts along with the L0pht (@Stake).
#2600 is still active on IRC, but phreaking is nearly dead yeah, at least in its original form. Haven't read the magazine in years.
Also, phonelosers.org used to be the place to be for trolling phone systems in the 90s. Some funny memories.

altho they were, as far as i can tell, fully aware that what they were doing wasnt complex... in any case thats whats made them famous: making it clear that many places you trust with your data are easily compromised.

also i feel that this has all allowed me a fascinating glimpse into script kiddie culture.

i hope exposing security problems for attention was their goal, because in that case they succeeded. i laughed with them when they were taking on white hat security firms and making them look silly, but making thousands of people's personal data public domain, when they weren't asking for it... and without responsible disclosure? they go against everything most of the hacker culture stands for, with a healthy dose of narcissism.

i guess the question is: can you bring public awareness to security flaws without leaking sensitive data like that? ... i mean they have to be able to prove that they have actually acquired this data in some way....and it has to grab people's attention...
im not implying that lulzsec's approach is the only one. i just honestly cant see a way around that dilemma...

That depends. I know that quite a bit of the time news articles here will comment about people having their information compromised, even if it isn't leaked out to everyone on the internet. For example, when our Alberta Health Records were compromised the news article would say something like "Your Health Records May Have Been Compromised" even though the health records weren't actually posted for everyone to see.

However, if the company isn't a public one (take Sony for example) it will often times take a few days for them to admit a security breach. But they usually admit there's a security breach in the end. I think the main reason they did it was just to distinguish themselves from the others, so they could get the media attention they wanted. It's quite often that personal privacy is breached, it's not very often when that gets posted all around the internet, which is why they caught everyones attention.
