I agree with this. Whether I'm listening to mixes, or dancing at a gig, the medium is secondary to the actual music.

One of the best sets I've heard was at a large outdoor party.
It was a group from France called Tripiatric.
Very psy orientated Techno.
I couldn't even see the 2 guys in the group but oh my the music they played was incredible.

That is music transcending medium.

myself and my buddy work our fucking asses off with a controller. obviously not everyone does, and there are probably more "djs" out there not doing shit with them but come on

see, nobody arguing in favor of controllers ever actually instigates or starts the war. they're always on the defensive. I respect the hell out of anyone no matter what they use if they do it well. However it doesn't seem to work that way with the hardcore vinyl guys. and if you see someone saying the modern technology is better 100% of the time they're just a tnuc anyway.

This thread makes me so happy that vinyl is obsolete and beatmatching is on its way out.
and i don't care which medium anyone uses. but if you call yourself a dj and don't even have the slightest idea of the basics of djing (what are djs doing when...?), well something's wrong then...

i love when i see people with laptops and controllers doing something innovative, but when i see people viewing waveforms to mix and checking facebook etc during a set i get irked as a performer who can dj and as someone trying to put together a live pa that is more than just a laptop and ableton

to all vinyl vs digital vs wav vs mp3 discussions:

I really don't have 2100 pounds to buy two turntables and mixer :6: wish I had though

also that paradox live setup is an ancient version of a ableton live set.

True, but I could hook up my laptop and start Itunes and you'll hear some great music too :)

I'd rather HEAR someone play an amazing set, i don't care what they play it on.
I've heard shitty sets on both vinyl and digital. I've also heard amazing sets on both vinyl and digital. If it were up to me, I would rather hear a great vinyl set, because the ratio of amazing to shit tunes found on vinyl is much higher than that same ratio for digital. Also, there is also just a higher likelyhood that you're going to hear a better set with vinyl, just because the effort of collecting records and buying turntables would result in a higher chance of beatmatching being good by the person since they have already put in so much effort to prepare for djing, as opposed to a digital set where getting tunes is laughably easy and buying equipment could cost as low as $100, so the lack of effort is probably mirrored in the quality of the set.

Digital compared to analog is like comparing GMO to organic food. On one hand it takes a lot of hard work with plenty of variables to screw things up, but the end result is more rewarding and better for you. The other is quick, easy and cheap and most won't be able to tell any difference, especially when they are raised on it

I can accept the best of both worlds when it comes to audio, but I would get way more stoked on seeing someone mixing on vinyl playing along to a 303 and 808 then some kid on a laptop spinning some knobs on his controller any day. Come to think of it I would rather be that guy mixing wax with my 303 and 808, but I have a hard enough time paying rent and bills let alone buying vintage hardware. So at the end of the day trying to make the same tunes on programs on my laptop or even my iphone is good enough for me.

So listening to vinyl is better for your health? And more rewarding? What about when you can't see inside the dj booth, are the health benefits still there if they're playing on vinyl?

Some of these claims are getting really outlandish.

This really is utter bollocks and has to be the most generalised statement yet. Some of the top dj's who have been doing their thing in their resepctive scenes with vinyl for many years....now opt for other mediums or a mix of them all. I wont be hearing a shit set from these artists if it is using scratch, cdj's etc....its all about tune selection and the experience that DJ's have in picking the right tunes. It has nothing to do with digital or vinyl. I have heard and wrongly purchased some proper shite on vinyl...just because its on vinyl doesnt make it a good tune. works both ways. your post was surely fishing for a response like mine....if so i took the bait!! lol

Vinyl has a better bass response, I suppose bass is not really that good for your body but it's good for the soul. Personally I find it more rewarding and better sounding making sounds on my hardware than a DAW.
These claims are 100% true!

Wrong.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RIAA_equalization

More specifically:
RIAA equalization is a form of pre-emphasis on recording and de-emphasis on playback. A recording is made with the low frequencies reduced and the high frequencies boosted, and on playback the opposite occurs. The net result is a flat frequency response, but with attenuation of high frequency noise such as hiss and clicks that arise from the recording medium. Reducing the low frequencies also limits the excursions the cutter needs to make when cutting a groove. Groove width is thus reduced, allowing more grooves to fit into a given surface area, permitting longer recording times. This also reduces physical stresses on the stylus which might otherwise cause distortion or groove damage during playback.

A potential drawback of the system is that rumble from the playback turntable's drive mechanism is amplified by the low frequency boost that occurs on playback. Players must therefore be designed to limit rumble, more so than if RIAA equalization did not occur.
