Fuck no, I'm shit-scared of flying anyways, just the idea of a normal sky-dive makes me feel really uneasy, I couldn't bring myself to watch the live stream because the idea of what he was doing made me feel really anxious, now that I know he didn't die horribly I might actually be able to watch it
Did you read the Joseph Kittinger wiki I posted?
Kittinger's first high-altitude jump, from about 76,400 feet (23,300 m) on November 16, 1959, was a near-disaster when an equipment malfunction caused him to lose consciousness.[2] The automatic parachute opener in his equipment saved his life. He went into a flat spin at a rotational velocity of about 120 rpm. The g-forces at his extremities have been calculated to be over 22 times the force of gravity, setting another record.
Fuck right off.

Well it probably didnt help that he lied about his suit malfunctioning before the jump so the flight wouldnt be postponed!

The science vs religion photo that's going around based on this is so retarded. Did they miss the whole bit where Kittinger told him that the same guardian angel that looked after him would make sure Baumgartner was ok?
Selective hearing's a bitch...

^^ I'd guess those sorts of records are kind of hard to verify reliably. I expect there's a decent shout for a few of the early NASA test pilots who effectively crash landed in various capsule designs... apparently it was quite common to open the capsule to find that the pilot's eyes had come out of their sockets... one guy's face was so destroyed that a press photo of the recovery led to one of the more enduring "NASA have an alien in captivity" rumours!
