Not for mass production, no, but for short-runs and experimenting, maybe.

what kind of ballpark phigure are u looking to press up 500 vinyl, full artwork, full labels, download code things, proper weight vinyl and distro?

there are so many steps lol (all of them costing money)...fuck must be nigh on impossible to turn a profit. most bros i know doing vinyl labels are still turning at least break even - some more, and a minority making a bit to cover a few releases in future.

i suppose music of this ilk has basically levelled with the art world in a strange way. you gotta pay for the exhibitions, pay to produce, you may sell a few but most often you wont sell shit and do it cos its what you like. i dont have much respect for people who 'get out of the business cos they couldnt turn a dollar' most kunts cant turn a dollar doing what they are into and thats the way it is. people want instant sucess instant cash just cos its music, its not like art and its a crowded market with a narrow focus. if that focus is selling shit then your gonna fail hard and deserve to do so in a round abaout way...
lol fuk

From research I've done, for that, you'd be looking at about £1250-1500

yeah i know, just being cheeky.

As a further aside, I reckon garethom's figures for vinyl+artwork+distro wouldn't be too far off a CD run of the same size.

Nah a small run of CDs is much cheaper.
Digipack 500 run is round $650-700
Jewelcase 500 run is round $500-550

how well does this work? seems like it'd be a lot of effort convincing a lot of record shops that it's worth their while stocking your record

obviously you gota put shitloads of effort into these things but how much money would it actually save?

It's more a time investment, record shops are run by people who love music. I've yet to meet a decent shop owner not willing to stock releases, usually on SoR. but getting out there, meeting them, building up contacts, getting good shelf space, all takes time.
I make music as Forsaken, you can DL all my unreleased (and a couple released) bits here.

Sell direct through bandcamp or bigcartel - market this yourself if you have a following already.

I think 300 records you can do for £650

so if you can shift half of these records at a cost effective £5 directly (making about £4 profit per) you can break even.

I haven't done it yet, but feedback from those that have: you need to put in time ringing/visiting record shops. You also get to know people though, building personal relationships with record shops is definitely a good thing.

edit: pete beat me to it

Odea did it DIY with their first vinyl release: http://odearecords.bigcartel.com/

That's the beauty of bandcamp, there's your store front and you can self distro.
One thing that always kind of baffled me about dance music compared to other genres is why so few people sell their actual music at shows, especially since shows are such a large part of the culture.
Like have a table with vinyl, cds, merch like most bands do.

clubs run longer through the night and people get far more fucked up. know a few nights do it but let's be real.. clubbing till 6am is a bit different from a show that may finish at about midnight.

you'd have to be a right dickhead to put vinyl out in this day and age.
