we all know the "same drum samples" thing is bullshit, and the same could be said for all of dj premier's post-Ownerz beats, all of premos snares sound pretty much exactly the same. and for rap beats, 9th has some of the most creative patterns. he's one of the only producers who frequently takes the snare off beat 2 & 4, or puts the snare on other beats. plus we're talking about rap beats not jazz pieces, there isnt much you can do with the drums when if you're planning on having someone rap over them.

Maybe I need to hear more of his older work.
Its not 'bullshit'... he even mentioned it in an interview. The argument was then... does it matter if you use the same drums as long as it sounds good!? no it doesnt (...Kanye used the drums from Xxplosive on the whole of College dropout!?). But I do prefer it with a little more thought behind patterns. It just seems a little... find a sample, cut it, arrange (very well might I add) but then just whack any old drums over it (alot of the time, too loud for the melody).
He could be so much better, perhaps if he had a more Dilla informed approach to drums, then he'd be on top.
opinions, opinions.

uh... older work? LB is about as far back as it goes (forget the binky fingers and cesar comanche albums). you need to listen to his newer/under the radar stuff.
thought behind the patterns? again we're talking about rap beats. i'd like to hear the buddy rich of rap beat drums.
and a lot of pre-donuts dilla beats had really loud, crisp, cutting drums.

Wasnt so much as loud and crisp... more distorted, bite the ears kind of loud.Constrobuz wrote:

EDIT: Im not talking about Dilla when I say that... I mean 9th's.
I find El-P (for Company Flow's) drum patterns to be rather variable... and behind possibly the most intricate of rap vocals. (Funcrusher Plus)

He produced most of the tracks on all his own albums, plus plenty for other mc's around the uk, including...... "Braindead remix for RA Rugged Man & Stig" wotta tune!!
Evil Ed, Cee Why, LG & Mr Thing also make some super heavy shizzle.
If he made any of the beats from Return of the Drifter - more respect!!

I'd have to say RJD2. Personally (as there is no definitive answer, and I don't expect people to agree with me
), you don't get tighter than Ghostwriter. It has to be one of my favourite instrumentals ever.
Dilla, Madlib, Dan The Automator and Premiere are also really sick.

Why E-Swift is incredible
It sucks that Tash didn't do a verse. My favorite rapper and member of my favorite group and he doesn't rap on my favorite tunes by them.
So so so underrated. I have no idea why he doesn't get more mentions, Tha Alkaholiks wouldn't be what they were without his incredible beats. Yeah broken up. Poor word choice.
YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN. Critically acclaimed and stuff.
