Very minimal fx processing can still give you a really nice sound. I cooked this up in FM8 and the only other thing I did was whack Live's amp onto it. Any suggestions though, guys and gals, on how to further distort this sound without loosing that nice definition? I've been struggling with that as I try to "flatten" the sound (so it doesn't sound so... idk spacey I guess)... I suppose I can't really describe it, but it seems to not be as crisp as I want it.

Edit: First without the amp distortion, then with.
use a waveshaper or foldback distortion to make it crispier.
or just layer and distort a bass with a clean sharp high end to go with your growl.

Chur. Long time lurker, basically enjoying what others have been coming up with and want to share my own for s&g's
Had a go at Kill The Noise style - straight out of Massive, no effects, two hours work (although the patch has taken a month or so of evolving, as 'Im sure all good patches do)
Soundcloud
(I have no idea how to embed)
-Saw, Throat and Sonic wavetables. Mixture of Bend + and spectrum
-Minor phasing on the sonic which seems to be a key step.
-Shapers in the insert slots, Drive and d expander.
-Bandpass and double notch filters.
Linked everything to a performer lfo (only one because im too lazy) and there you go.

Open up massive, select sine wave on first oscillator, enable modulation oscilator, enable phase on osc 1, move the phase knob... what do you hear? Typical FM sound?

I guess it's phase modulation or PM. It might be like "Phase Distortion" which was used to get around the FM patent.

Actually none of FM synths use FM. As someone said before, FM changes fundamental frequency of the sound so it sounds just bad. PM is much better.

Not a growl, but still reese like

Anyone wants any info?
Soundcloud compresion killed the most important part in growl basses: high end. Uncompressed version sounds so much organic.
Soundcloud
- Another thing
Wettest growl i've heard in a while. Show me how to process dat.

The second one is quite good, I'd be interested to hear the process too.

Well that's basically one oscilattor in massive (crude) on bend+/- mode with A BIT of phase modulation and double notch filter. Then I used p shaper, s shaper (dry/wet is automated), t tube, camelphat, waves rbass, shit like that.

Sounds literally exactly like the growls Zomboy uses in some of his tracks.

that can't possibly be it, I've been fiddling around with a raw massive patch with those sort of settings and it sounds like your average distorted massive "growl". Or is that processing where things really start to shine?

Ive found that automating a formant oscillator and it's effect on different operators in FM8 has gotten me some pretty good results:
