nah youre most definitely correct. I think that one point in time right before the brosplosion, that might be the best period of dubstep. almost all of the music was pretty high quality, and there were so many different styles. pre-bro dubstep was a style that is nowhere to be found these days but it really wasn't half bad. think like classic rusko hits, caspa, emalkay. they had some good tunes. when we think back to them today we throw them in with the bullshit tunes but at the time they were enjoyed by most people I think. early dungeon was also new and exciting. kryptic minds type stuff. and then of course the classic dubby stuff like medi releases, dmz was still releasing stuff, skreamizms... then i think there was also a lot of techno-influenced stuff like diary of an afro warrior. this may have been part of the pre-bro though.

at least that's my perception of it.

From memory, that sound pretty accurate.

Unpopular opinion though - I'm not a fan of Diary of an Afro Warrior as an album. It has four or five good tunes but the rest is forgettable imo.

well. only ones i downloaded were (in order from best to worst imo):

-crunked up
-26 basslines
-night ft. coki
-e trips
-the cut
-b4 the dual
-pleasure
-someone 20

so 8/14 i bothered to download. wasn't feeling the rest.

but when you think about it, if an album has 8 tunes that you really like (at least in my case), then that makes a pretty damn good album. i can't think of many albums, even by my favorite artists, where I enjoy every tune on the album enough to download it. pretty sure the only album i have in full where I downloaded the tunes separately instead of the album as a whole is skream!

edit: actually also magnetic man

always hated stuff like crunked up and 26 basslines

in fact ive always struggled to find any benga tunes to enjoy. even his old big apple releases :-/

same with skream. got like 4 tracks id maybe to listen to, and even then theres like a million other tracks around the world i would choose over those 4

~ok hated is maybe a harsh word. strongly disliked

couldn't disagree more :)

what kinda dubstep do you like?
kidshuffle wrote:no lightbulb?
i guess it just didn't catch my attention when i first listened to it. now that i go back and listen to it, it's not bad. wouldn't say it's that special though. if i had to put it on that list it would be right above pleasure, tops.

what can i say im just a hard man 2 impress

i like quite varied stuff as long as its groovy, percussive, deep, kinda weird etc. even with all that stuff im still super critical n picky

most dmz and deep medi, some hyperdub, <3 old loefah tunes (prefer his dubs to the halftime ones), dark garage, benny ill, dj dinesh old tempa etc, ghost records, certain stuff on mindstep, bit of wayfarer and taiko, chord marauders, gantz, commodo, 2562, some yunx tunes are alright, oh ye all hessle stuff, some hemlock stuff, just been rinsin loads of vivek today, d1 rules, kahn, icicle, jack sparrow, headhunter, kode9, ital tek, trutek, innamind, box clever.... u get the picture

and now u know my life story

like for example light bulb has potential, but that bassline that comes in 1:25 totally ruins it for me lol

I used to think I wasn't. The same with Skream! Then I sat down and actually listened to them. Good albums imo. Not GREAT, but good.

Yeah man there are some tunes on there I still play alot but then it was the album that got me into this music so I may be a tiny bit biased.
