Yep, wysocki nailed it. When you make a movie about whats beyond the physical world you have the chance to do something that can be really thought-provoking with regards to questions about things like time, or our existence. I think 2001 did that beautifully.
But i know benny's not the only guy that hates it, ive seen people who are supposedly film experts say that 2001 is the most over-rated piece of shit lol. And tbh, i can see why you'd say that. I guess its like how i still pretty much hate Drive even though its a highly regarded movie

Anchorman 2 did not disappoint, the most thoroughly childish and ridiculous film since the original. Not as great as the original but still had me in stitches

bennyfroobs wrote:loooool 2001 holy grail of sci fi?? that film is severely wank. 3 long drawn out boring hours of pretentious shit with zero substance. yeah some of the sets are stunning and its nicely filmed, but other than that its got absolutely zilch going for it. watched it sober and really really high and both times i thought it was absolute drivel. blade runner is defo superior but the story is still lacking tbh
Oblivion (that shite tom cruise film?) is another perfect example of complete style over substance. visually incredible at points, but overall it was utter crap.
i wish people would try harder with the stories instead of thinking "manz ....u know what would look really cool in 3D???,,,,"
someone recommend me something worth watching. the only films ive properly enjoyed recently were synecdoche NY & un prophete )-:
Just chipping in because I love these two but know nothing about sci-fi. I really enjoyed Blade Runner but only watched it recently. I got half way through 2001 and gave up, I guess I should get it over with at some point.
I really enjoyed Moon. I don't imagine it is very highly regarded among sci-fi nerds but there was something really moving there.

Interesting that you two didn't like/couldn't finish 2001 but enjoyed Synecdoche New York..

lol but amazing visualls is literally all 2001 has going for it, theres really nothing more to it in the slightest :/. its a boring pretentious heap of crap
I disagree with this.
Here is a snippet from a write up Roger Ebert did.
"What he (Kubrick) had actually done was make a philosophical statement about man's place in the universe, using images as those before him had used words, music or prayer. And he had made it in a way that invited us to contemplate it -- not to experience it vicariously as entertainment, as we might in a good conventional science-fiction film, but to stand outside it as a philosopher might, and think about it."
I invite you to read the whole article.

The most interesting topic the movie covered for me personally was humanity. How in the presented world the computer seemed more human than the humans that created and operated it. HAL lied to the crew, it showed fear (and curiosity I guess) of death, its life "flashed" before its eyes as it was dying. While the humans seemed really emotionless and disconnected.
ye i worked a lot of that stuff out wen i was watchin the film tbh, which is why i think theres nothing more to it than nice visuals. boring cliched "what is life" theme. i guess considerin the time it was made it was the perfect movie for a loada stoned hippies to derp out to and try to work out what the message was and when they finally figure it out they could be all "ohhh my gawwddd maannnnn. its just..... like.. life...evolution....everything... soooo deeeep bruh". personally i dont think its deep, i think its tedious and pompous
what i find even more pompous is this ridiculous elitist "oh you dont appreciate 2001, you lowly peasant" attitude that most 2001 fans seem to have (spotted one in the comments of the review). its like ffs cmon man ur not special. the concept really wanst hard to grasp.
i can see why it appeals to some people, but personally its not for me. the most i could get out of rewatching it is doin a couple of print screens for some nice desktop backgrounds

similar concept behind both of them but synecdoche is incredibly well done, unlike 2001 which is just boring and up its own arse

Meh.
99% of films with Matt Damon are terrible the only films with him i like are The Good Shepherd and The Departed (Good Will Hunting tried too hard).

Yeah I felt the same way. I already agreed with the political message that the filmmakers were trying to express, so I spent a lot of my focus on plot and character development. Characters in the movie were falt which kind of ruined it for me. The plot itself was very predictable.

Synecdoche New York only dealt with, what is in my opinion, minutiae.
2001 had a much grander scale.
