is it the surrealism and imagery that make you think Synecdoche is up its own arse Laszlo ? I had a lot of fun trying to work out what the out-of-place elements in the movie were referring to. I'll agree that it's more crowded than Eternal Sunshine or the other films Kaufman wrote. It was the first time he was fully in charge after all, probably went all-out. There are still a lot of subtle elements like the burning house, stalker Sam (barely noticed him on the first viewing)... Only issue I have with it is the ending. It's... Messy.

This really is a must watch imo.
Yes.

Wanted to mention this movie in my previous post. Similar in a way to 2001 in that it communicates mostly through music and images. Beware though, it is a non-narrative film, so it's not for everyone.

@benny

It's like you said, the movie isn't for everyone. I personally love looking for messages beyond the plot. Good to know we are on the same page when it comes to the visuals.

It's hard to get this across without sounding like a tnuc, but I just found the film/message too easy to work out. Then all you're left with is three hours (or however long it is. Feels like a fucking lifetime, and no that isn't a triumph in itself) of neurosis. It's a poor man's Lynch film, but then, Kaufman is very hit and miss for me imo imo.

Synecdoche, New York is like a middle class teenage boy who has read two chapters of 'Existentialism for Dummies', gone out and bought himself a black turtle neck and beret and declared to his parents that they know nothing. He might look cool, he might have a point, but he definitely comes across as a bit of a twat.

synecdoche is hugely inspired by kubric and the shining and it's basicly the same kind of film. I think a lot of people can't sympathise or are turned off by phillip seymour hoffman because he's just such a brilliantly convincing actor.

Check this one out though. Possession.
there's just one minor issue and that is that there's no chance that you wont fall in love with isabelle adjani and then have to compare every woman you meet with her and she's 800 years old :6:

Meh.
Yeah I felt the same way. I already agreed with the political message that the filmmakers were trying to express, so I spent a lot of my focus on plot and character development. Characters in the movie were falt which kind of ruined it for me. The plot itself was very predictable.

Pretty much spot on. Liked the design early on, like he'd taken the District 9 ethos and just pushed it as far as he could. But yeah, clocked how the story was going to play out

Don't really get the hype of this movie, 'cause it's just a pretentious dull arty farty movie. And although i'm a big fan of slow and dark movies, this was just not good enough to suppress a yawn. I was also not a big fan of the structure of the movie. It did not only do the movie any good, but it was also very confusing. And i think it was Von Trier's intention to hate the characters, 'cause what a tnucs. :lol: And i understand that's part of a bipolar disease, but then again, he didn't do any effort to let you sympathize with the characters. But still, there were things that were good. Like the soundtrack (it was Wagner's Tristan und Isolde, nuff said) and the acting. It were especially the women (no offence) that were doing a wonderful prestation. And also the end was more or less memorable.

6;5/10.

Did someone see Antichrist btw? I'm think to also give that movie a watch, but first i'm gonna see Nymphomaniac. 8)
