Re: Secret Ninja Movie Club (aka what have you watched latel
watched this really weird japanese film called The Woman of the Dunes yesterday
was a bit much for me, didn't especially enjoy it although the soundtrack and some of the shots were really nice

The majority of the coen bros films i've seen are thoroughly underwhelming. Not bad just not worth buying on dvd.
Lebowski is wicked though.

Re: Secret Ninja Movie Club (aka what have you watched latel
I could understand that if you had said Paul Thomas Anderson or Woody Allen, but definitely not with their work. Which ones have you seen?
Ahh ok. I think rewatching films isn't the greatest measure. I'd rather watch street trash or lethal weapon 1 a couple of times than say the pledge or chinatown or the like. Not bad just not worth buying on dvd.

Raising Arizona - Saw it too long ago to really have an opinion at this pointhubb wrote:Which ones have you seen?
Miller's Crossing - Good. Perfectly entertaining but nothing special (has been done in other films)
Fargo - Really liked this when I first saw it. Years later it hasn't aged well.
The Big Lebowski - Wicked
The Man Who Wasn't There - Again, it's entertaining enough but a bit meh.
The Ladykillers - Downright awful.
No Country for Old Men - Clearly one of the better ones.
Burn After Reading - Entertaining but..
True Grit - Entertaining but..
Re: Secret Ninja Movie Club (aka what have you watched latel
Totally agree then - but only because I haven't watched Fargo, Barton Fink in a long time. I loved true grit though.
I haven't been able to watch country for old men yet actually - tried like a 10 times but fall asleep.
I think watching their stuff is mandatory though.
Burn before watching imo

I think their films are a lot better than most American films from the last fifteen years or so but that isn't saying a great deal. They're well crafted and so on but in comparison to the rest of cinema history they're just ok films (on the whole).
Re: Secret Ninja Movie Club (aka what have you watched latel
Yeah!
Good directors in hollywood are very rarely american.
The best american directors are actors.
Like Mel Gibson who is australian (hmmm), Clint Eastwood (meh but...) and Sean Penn (crossing guard and the pledge).
I think Chronenburg is canadian and Lynch has never really been hollywood.
Darren Aronofsky has been terrible since he became successful.
Brian dePalma can't get his projects financed and Scorsese has been awful for thirty years.
Maybe Kathryn Bigelow is the best mainstream director actually. ¨
Enjoyed most of her films.
Weird. Imo

I thought it was too. Even when having a discussion with a mate about how bad I thought Scorsese was, aswell as raging bull, mean streets and taxi driver but tried to rewatch goodfellas and it was unbearable. Haven't dared watching any of the others again because I'm 'afraid' it will taint them. Ray Liotta is really bad in it
.

There's three of them though. I recommend them! While we're on that tip, have a look at City On Fire if you want to see the inspiration for Reservoir Dogs.

Hong-Kong original. The Departed is basically a remake. I like the departed but infernal affairs is better imo

I mean honestly, some of the Departed is a shot-for-shot copy of Infernal Affairs. The Oscar he got for it was a joke imo.Rönin wrote:Hong-Kong original. The Departed is basically a remake. I like the departed but infernal affairs is better imo
I still really like The Departed, it's an enjoyable film, but there's not a whole lot of creativity going on there.
Re: Secret Ninja Movie Club (aka what have you watched latel
If you liked that then definitely check out Takeshi Kitano's other stuff. Like, for real - badman films!bennyfroobs wrote:ahh sick! ill defo watch them. quite like asian cinema.

C'mon, Joe Pesci is just terrifying throughout this film, unreal performance imo. Ray Liotta's great in it too.
Also, "good shot, what do you want from me?"
