Obvs totes

Because it's impossible that both directors have read any literature ever where the theme might've occured.

The point I'm trying to make is that where you do get inspiration from doesn't have to be film/film 1:1.

It's a very broad concept.

Like the triple boobed woman in total recall. Is that idea forever meant to point back to that one scene in a film or is it just so clean as a concept/thought that eight monkeys stuck in a room would eventually come up with it?

I know a lot of people who try and say "NO IT'S NOT A RIP OFF OF BATTLE ROYALE BECAUSE DISTRICTS AND TRIBUTES AND XYZ" but really even that is stolen from battle royale, just instead of 2 tributes from each different district being used a la hunger games an entire school class from one of the school prefectures (district) in japan is picked each year (the article posted earlier fails to mention that the prefectures cycle and a school from the same prefecture cannot be picked 2 years in a row). The article also makes an assumption that all of japan has fallen into chaos hence the BR Act so there can't be poor or rich present like the different districts in the hunger games show when really the BR act is in place to prevent japan falling into complete chaos, and even amongst the school children in battle royale differences in wealth and class can be seen (shuya and yoshitoki both being orphaned, and shuya's dad committed suicide as he couldn't cope with life as a wage slave anymore due to being poor). The tributes being able to volunteer themselves is also present in battle royale as well as the hunger games, with shogo and kazuo both volunteering to participate.

I would agree that it's not a rip off if the concept of children killing children was the only thing the same, or even if the author acknowledged that she had heard of battle royale prior to writing her book, it's not exactly a niche book/film really. But for her to state she didn't know of it's existence before finishing the first book is bollocks.

I also take umbridge with the article saying that the characters in hunger games are more 3 dimensional and not psychopathic compared to battle royale as that's simply uninformed and not true.

I don't care either way, haven't seen hunger games and don't particularly care for battle royale, but it is possible to come up with the same idea completely independently (see the US/UK Dennis The Menace story).

Mean once, I came up with the idea of a sleeping bag that had an inflatable bottom like a bed. Lo and behold, somebody had already invented it.

They're probs chatting egg tho.

Well it is to a degree,if you take it as a single book/film but its not. People dont judge lord of the rings based off the first film only do they?
"Oh its just about some guy leaving home with his mates" and then disregard what its building too, where as BR is a singular enclosed work with the whole overall Arc.
They have kids in the first one, in the second they have adults, old people, lunatics, the lot and all the reasoning for why and so on.

I just dont see how saying its a BR rip off means anything, had you never seen BR you wouldnt know that, so how does it effect your enjoyment/intrest of it in its own right?
Do you not watch any large monster film incase there is a link to radiation making it ala Godzilla? Goodfellas because Godfather allready covered one mans struggle/life in the Mafia?

I cant also work out why its not a possibility the auother has never heard of BR either, Im sure there are swathes of people that have never even watched a forgein film, let alone a japanese 90s borderline gore fest

only seen the first one, wwhich was an undeniable rip off. i dont care about the sequels, theyre probably shite as well

what do u mean u dont see how it means anything? it means the whole premise of the first film/book is lazy and chored, with a few details changed. its a totally Zomby thing to do. also the fact that it was fairly terrible effected my enjoyment and interest. also thats the sorta thing people who try to defend skream using literally whole songs from disco sample packs say

yeah exactly, i dont choose watch kaiju movies because theyre shit b2b recycled

@ gaz

imo, those situations are pretty inapplicable to the battle royale / hunger games situation.
(no offense) but the camping idea is a pretty obvious solution to a common problem. the dennis the mennace stories were created like what 70 years ago? its not imprbable that neither of the creators knew what the other was up to, no internet, less globalisation etc. battle royale on the other hand has been doing the rounds for like ten (?) years and its pretty a pretty well known story, most people have heard of it at least

Oh sure, sorry I was just lolling at the world there.
Yeah I'm probably with you on that :) Debating whether I should check it out in the cinema though.

The second she began researching her book (which she would have done, all authors research to a certain extent no matter how fictional to make sure their idea hasn't already been done. Whether they choose to let that stop them however is clearly up to them.) she would have found information about battle royale. I mean you type in "child killing island government", some pretty vague and non battle royale specific terms, into google and the second result is the imdb for battle royale. "Teenage killing tournament government" bumps it down to fourth on the list. She would have either had to only research using very specific plot based terms such as "girl called katniss learns to like dweeby boy called peta who can make pretty cakes which translates into amazing camo skills somehow" or not researched her book at all.

*edit* and i've no problem if she was influenced by battle royale at all, it's her tenacity to claim they can be that similar in the internet age "on accident" that I have a problem with. It doesn't affect my enjoyment of battle royale at all, but it did make me stop reading after the first hunger games book and not see the film. Also there's a second battle royale where they are grown up that is being forgotten but a0 it's shite and b) I don't know the hunger games story past the first book so I don't know if she nicked that plot too.

Out of the furnace.
One of the most anticlimactic films I think I have ever seen, the setup leads you to pure disappointment.

It provides distraction from planning an essay on the role Nucleic Acids play in transcription and translation for my exam tomorrow. You'd do the same in my position
