Picked up from my weed guy last night and he said a few of his regular student buyers had been round that afternoon.. bunch of bored middle-class kids ghettoing up to go and find some trouble and "get involved" (I fucking HATE that phrase)... with any luck they got strip-mugged and had to call their Mum for a lift home.

That hit and run sounded horrible. I saw that happen once at a taxi rank in Bristol. Fucking horrible.

you're basically saying if you don't agree with a reporters opinion, you'll look for an opinion you do like regardless of whether its closer to the truth or not

the job of a news reporter is to report facts about situations around the world

the quality of news report is judged by the legitimacy, and quality of the both the factual content and the way it is expressed

its a reporters job to be impartial when it comes to factual content in their articles, they can't just make them up to satisfy an agenda - thats madness!

interpretation of the facts is a different matter, but a GOOD reader should almost entirely disregard those elements of a report, those elements which turn a report into a story, cross reference the facts with all other stories on the same subject and then form THEIR OWN opinion of the 'story'

not just shop around until they find something which fits their world view irrespective of its truth value

Nowhere did I advocate making up factual content. I am not suggesting that reporters lie.

I'm not saying that I'm not forming my own opinion. I just don't subscribe to the view of pure objectivity. It is possible to still report the story (and by this I mean the facts) whilst at the same time putting across your own opinion on it.

Quite a lot of witnesses saying they were hit deliberately. Shit went off in Birmingham last night, especially in Aston, police got shot at, a scrapyard was set on fire this morning too, only just gone out I think. Worrying thing about that area of Birmingham is the gang activity. If just one wrong person got shot, who knows what that could kick off.

With regards to the media, I do believe Charlie Brooker's thoughts on US spree killers could equally apply to the riots. Seeing police being massively ineffective towards looting is hardly going to discourage similar outbreaks elsewhere.
