Classics revisited this afternoon. Criterion edition of Ivan's Childhood. This movie is genious in so many ways, like most of Tarkovsky's work...
Might watch another one later.

Ended up watching Leviathan (2012, not the silly Alien remake). Not much to say really,...its title is cleverly shown as it ends up showing how the fishing boat is actually said leviathan (you can actually hear Mastodon's album playing in the background at one point
), but it doesn't go further than some nice imagery. Some of the shots were too long and boring.
5/10.

lol are you thinking of the clooney one or compromised in some way?
It's probably one of the most visually interesting films ever made, but ok.

Dallas Buyers Club
Pretty good. McConaughey is excellent, Leto is good and it'd be incredibly difficult to fumble such a good storyline, but it didn't suck me in as much as I thought it might.

Blue Jasmine
Excellent. Reminded me a lot of Streetcar Named Desire.

Watched Rockers last night, pretty chill movie. Spotted about 90% of all jungle/dubstep rasta samples
Re: Secret Ninja Movie Club (aka what have you watched latel
^ Still need to watch that. It's been on my harddrive for months now.
Re: Secret Ninja Movie Club (aka what have you watched latel
Prefered Solyaris myself but I thought Stalker was also really good.Nihilism wrote:Fuck, i've never saw a Tarkovsky movie, recommendations plz.
Have not seen The Mirror yet, will check that out.
Re: Secret Ninja Movie Club (aka what have you watched latel
I'd go through them chronologically. But that isn't so straight forward as it seems.
Ivan's Childhood is one of his 'easier films' to watch. Deffo a good starting point that will tell you whether you are going to love or hate his style.
Then again, Andrei Rublev, his second big hit, is probably the hardest one to digest.
Then his infamous tria: Solyaris, The Mirror and Stalker. All three are excellent and can be watched in any order I suppose.
Keep Nostalghia and Offret for last, these aren't so much movies as they are dreams.

The Wolf Of Wall Street
Excellent. Probably could've been a touch shorter, but DiCaprio does a great job and the supporting cast are all solid. Enjoyable.

The Wolf Of Wall Street is Scorsese worthy tbh.
Also big ups to Criterion for restoring classic movies. Fingers crossed that they're gonna restore Citizen Kane and Metropolitan one of these days.

Van Diemen's Land (2009)
Had pretty low expectations going into this one: critical response had been just above average and it got a 50% ar RT and a 5,9 at imdb.
I found it surprisingly enjoyable, even gripping at times. Very bleak and monotonous, there's still a certain beauty to it. It has some great dialogue in the early parts but slowly spins into a nightmare scenario, funnily enough the feeling of despair and acceptance is transmitted to the viewer, so that the shocking situations actually become less shocking somehow...
I liked it even though it certainly isn't a masterpiece. 7/10
