Re: Post your unpopular opinions.
i wonder a lot about why some labels do vinyl only, some do both, some are digital only, and tbh at the end of the day i think its a money thing. they do whichever format they think is gonna make them the most money. i've heard in some interviews that digital only artists actually lose money on many of their releases. i wonder if vinyl only releases make more profits. and i think that has a lot more to do with these label's calculations than some of you guys think.

Re: Post your unpopular opinions.
idk with mastering, artwork, manufacturing & pressing, distro etc. plus it depends on how much you press
obvs you're not going to lose money on vinyl if you're boddika/joy o/loefah
talking out of my ass tho cause i have no idea how this works, but since pretty big names like distance saying his label's gonna go digi only from now on, can't be that much money involved?

Re: Post your unpopular opinions.
Rough guess.
Smaller labels lose money on vinyl.
Bigger labels make money on vinyl.

Bigger labels make money on vinyl.

Re: Post your unpopular opinions.
what is the point in having a only digi label though? the artist can sell his tunes directly from bandcamp

Re: Post your unpopular opinions.
how will the people running the digi label feel like they are important and a part of the scene if they don't run the digi label?

Re: Post your unpopular opinions.
if it's a digi label of someone who's somewhat known/big in the scene it can get you more exposure i guess
if you're already known, then it doesn't really make sense
honestly don't know how digi labels take off tho. guessing the key is to shove releases in weekly?

Re: Post your unpopular opinions.
Labels give identity. You can follow a label for it's style or level of quality. It gives stuff exposure to those who follow them and gives the listener an easier way to track down things they like
Re: Post your unpopular opinions.
Some lables are just outlets whereas all big lables do other stuff with the same product like lincencing or videos.

Identity, exposure, promotion, etc. Also labels should be handling the costs of proper mastering, artwork, etc. which you don't always get when artists release themselves.
Re: Post your unpopular opinions.
Yeah that is another point. Left to their own devices a surprising amount of producers would not pay for a decent mastering job and get shit artwork for a pint off a mate.

Re: Post your unpopular opinions.
Yeah but the point was Ballad Of Chasey Lain and Stan are basically the same track except one is about Eminem and the other eating ass.
