all about this

i think too much dubstep these days sounds overly produced, the rawness of the early stuff definitely added to the sound. its why a lot of the 'dungeon' stuff sounds kinda bland and unmemorable imo
aye!!!! there used to be some dirt in the beats and no one cared. they were better for it. I'm not talking about the mixdown tho

thats why i always find myself listening to shit from 02, 03, 04, 05, etc... it was gritty, raw. dont find that much anymore

On the other hand, there's nothing wrong with cleanliness too. grittiness has its place in the productions of artists like mala, burial, kode9, etc, but cleanliness can also really fit a tune, for example congi's productions and all the stuff on innamind and dubstep for deep heads

So, fucking,true.

That's why I value the production of TMSV & especially LAS. They both have that old gritty quality to their mixdowns, obviously it's not to the extent to that of the older days, but it's reminiscent.

& Sonika yes, you give two great examples of the artist's that can pull off extremely crisp and well polished production.

The main producer for me whose tracks sound over-produced and too shiny is definitely Sleeper.

i doubt this is true but I've never really used freq analyzers for anything
i just listen
i sure as hell don't mix my sub louder than everything else
the systems amps and woofers make it sound that way
on top of that if its mixed loud it usually just drowns out everything else
at least i can hear the drums in most stuff
drums and perc are my favorite parts of this music hands down
to me a bassline is just one part, often just supporting the rest of the music
but i come from a background of hip hop and rock and roll rather than sublo/EDM

When you guys start running soundsystems you can go ahead and keep telling me "Its not too much" "Its better that way" blah blah blah. It isn't. Thats just straight up poor mixing/mastering or a bad decision. Tunes shouldnt have to be poorly mixed to be "facemelting on a system", the system should stand on its own. If you played it on a proper system it would just be all bass and then you'd be like "why are all the highs and mids so quiet?". "Rawness of early stuff" give me a break.

Did you just refer to Gantz as clean? I kinda feel like you just did.

Remember that human ears are less sensitive to lower frequencies... your ears won't tell you the exact levels in the mix because they don't hear them exactly. Plus sub just generally takes up more headroom in the mix. Here's a frequency spectrum of part of Midnight Request Line, for example:

Audio is a touchy subject for me, lol. I dont mean any disrespect to anyone.

finally got my copy of this album. In terms of composition I think it's just stunning - a masterpiece. Mala is such an unbelievably talented artist. But yeah the bass does seem to be distorting a touch on my monitor speakers which is a shame.

holy shit, as humankind evolves, will we start hearing lower frequencies? think if we could listen to something -80 db without fucking exploding. it'd be like moving up a plane of existence.

Well having actually heard tracks such as Cuba Electronica at System I can assure you this is simply not the case

Sigh. There are many variables. Obviously im not just going to magically convince all of you somehow. Limiters and amps come into play as well. Similar thing happened with Education and Enter Dimensions, bass is much louder in the mix than your average track, making the highs (aka whole track) seem quieter in comparison. Those werent as big of an issue to me simply because they were singles. An album though, i had higher expectations.
