A brief scan of this thread suggests that ninjas are generally anti the riots
even if they have some understanding of the causes.
Questions from afar....specifically about Croydon,
main place of dubstep's multi-racial originators who often celebrated their street smarts,
tight communality & working class/unemployed aspirations to get ahead.
What's the attitude of these guys to the people who were rioting & looting in Croydon?
Presumably they know the locals who were involved...are related to them.
Do the originals have any influence there?
Are they publically sympathetic/supportive or publically condemnatory?
Do they feel intimidated into silence?

I dunno, if you look at how many kicked off it was a few hundred from areas with populations of thousands or tens of thousands so most of those affected by the same socio-economic factors didn't riot or loot. Also quite a few that have been charged with looting were actually employed which would lend more support to the opportunism theory. It will be interesting to see how many of those charged had previous offences for shoplifting, burglary or violence, might well be that a lot were the same minority that always seem to pull this shit in any town around the UK with a load of others who just got caught up in a rare situation.
I think the media has been pretty irresponsible in this - telling people there's not enough police to stop them isn't exactly going to stop copycat events is it?

par, massively disagree with that comment, these are dickhead kids, most are younger than 18 and all have a choice. Like someone said earlier, they have sidelined themselves, there are many people from impoverished backgrounds who find and make their own opportunities, you can't use that as an excuse to go looting, stealing and vandalising peoples property. "if anything they're heroes" is one of the stupidest things I have read in the last 4 days. They are young, easily led idiots in packs. They aren't standing up to a government, most of them have no fucking clue about their government and couldn't give 2 shits. The kids that do should understand that this is not how you get your way, sure you'll be heard but probably for the wrong reasons.
It is a shame that a non-violent march by black youths on Scotland Yard got less attention than this but if you don't get much attention you keep plugging away, you keep working hard for your cause. You don't lash out at the very society you feel excluded from or you make things worse. There are of course different types of rioter but the idiots have no clue and the clued up should know better.
I'd put a fiver on this being over by Sunday.

i think its crazy that so many commentators want to cast the angry-youth segment of the rioters as motivated by specific political convictions, or write them off because they clearly aren't.
i don't think it matters what they have in mind. even if it were all purely infantile indulgence, the fact that so many people felt such a strong need to claim ownership of the areas they live in must indicate feelings of isolation and deprivation.
also incredible is the cleanup / broomstick people and the people wanting to protect their homes and neighborhoods as a supplement to or replacement for police.
seems like there are so many working- and middle-class who want to live an honest life but who also have this deep unsatisfied need to feel some ownership of their community and environment.

So I sent an email out to all my American friends (old gamers and such) just to say I am fine and so is my family and what not...
Half of them didn't know what happened which was fine but the first question they asked was....
Why did they happen?
If i was in the their seat that would be what i'd ask how things are, do they need anything, etc, etc, etc.
Why does something like someones town being smashed to pieces always deserve a reason why it happened before they care... It pissed me off quite a bit really..

Just a little note on this because I see people assume this sort of thing about England a lot. We don't all know each other.. I know we live on a small island and quaintly get our brooms out at the first hint of a riot, but there are over 270,000 people living in Croydon. They definitely don't all know each other.
