Re: Post your unpopular opinions.
I think Four Tet is one of those bods that's too hard to criticise. He makes so much music, and in so many styles, that often he's gonna fuck up and make something you think is awful. On the flip though, he's gonna make something you like eventually, so you just wait it out.
Re: Post your unpopular opinions.
He just had a stack of 7s on the mixer and was pulling tunes out. Some reggae, some old ska, disco, weird world music tracks. Was fucking awesome, the sun had come out, everyone in the crowd was on a good vibe despite it being pack up.wolf89 wrote:Really? Oh bollocks. Ended up with Ryan and a few others drunk away from there until it was too late.wub wrote:His record store day set on Saturday was amazing.

I'd agree with that, I like a lot of his music but I'd also say I've ever heard a tune from him that stands out as anything better than decentgarethom wrote:I think Four Tet is one of those bods that's too hard to criticise. Goes for his sets as well I reckon. Sometimes its just any old set, like Wolf said dropping Skeng ect, but sometimes its mindblowing. Such an eclectic music taste, if he draws for a bit of everything and it works.. it really works. I have seen him when I've been less impressed though. I guess it depends on where hes playing, the type of crowd hes playing to and how long hes got... I bet his 6/9/12 hour sets are great.
Re: Post your unpopular opinions.
I've only heard There Is Love In You, Rounds and the Burial collabs but I sort of see what wolf wolfhates about it. There are moments in both of those albums where it's just bland hip hop drum beat and nice, inane melodies. He leans towards being too safe a bit too often. But I do rate some tunes of his quite a bit, and the Burial collabs are gorgeous of course.

This "safe" chat is utter wet in my opinion.

You hear 10 seconds of moth and you've heard the whole tune. I never even listen to the other tune from that releaseHarkat wrote:and the Burial collabs are gorgeous of course.

Re: Post your unpopular opinions.
only four tet i've really listened to was that madvillainy remixes ep and that was sick

Re: Post your unpopular opinions.
Gareth, see safe as a substitute for something more complex. I mean older people would never admit to being actually afraid of black metal, they would say it's too loud or something. Same goes for safe, where I think it suggests something being un- imaginative, not creatively surprising or something similar that would be a more fair form of critique.

Re: Post your unpopular opinions.
four tit is alright, at least from like 2011/12 onwards. nothing mindblowing tho. and wolf's right, his music is a bit safe and coffee table-leaning
Re: Post your unpopular opinions.
I find anything recent he's done super boring myself, thought 'There Is Love In You' was the last decent thing he's done (bar the Burial collabs) but even that isn't mindblowing. I just really don't care about what anyone thinks of musicians since it's all so subjective, but when people treat their own subjective value judgements as inheretly important peer reviewed research papers that are changing the course of music for years to come, I can't help but roll my eyes.

lolwolf89 wrote:I genuinely think Four Tet is making tame safe bland music and it just happens to be that the only way for him to seem at all exciting any more is for you to be someone living a boring life where you don't hear much new music apart from checking out what the guardian said was good while having breakfast. Everything is bland samples or sonically plain synth parts.
