At the moment I use only my laptop with free synths. I know its holding me back a bit so I want to start building up a studio like all the guys in here, but i'm preetty much broke rite now so its gonna have to be in small steps. Baring in mind that i have crap technical knowledge what should be the first thing i splash out on?

some setups seem to have to 2 monitor screens. why is this, whats the advantage?

Yeah for real. Im just getting to grips with my set up, currently experimenting with Reason/Cubase together, 2 screens makes a lot of sense now i've had a decent nights sleep!
